Woman Allegedly Files False Claim for Disability Benefits with NY Government, Unum

Ogdensburg, NYA woman in Ogdensburg, New York, has been accused of committing fraud relating to Unum disability insurance, according to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.

Davis, 52, is accused of collecting disability benefits from 2005 onward despite continuing to work. According to the source, Davis told the state insurance department that an injury sustained while at her job for the Cerebral Palsy Association of the North Country prevented her from working.

She also purportedly filled out documents for Unum Group, an insurer dealing with disability benefits, reinforcing her claim that her injuries precluded her continuing her job.

Davis allegedly collected $46,800 in disability benefits while simultaneously working as a self-employed family care provider, according to an investigation conducted by the state insurance department's Fraud Bureau.

State police arrested Davis on October 10th, and she is now being charged with third-degree insurance fraud and first-degree falsifying business records. If convicted, she faces a possible sentence of up to seven years in prison. The case is being tried in St. Lawrence County by the office of the district attorney.
