3,600 Dogs and Cats Sickened by Chinese Jerky Treats

. By
Los Angeles, CAThousands of pets have become ill after being fed jerky treats made in China. Nearly 600 animals have died, according to federal officials.

According to a report by MSNBC.com, dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes have been affected after eating chicken, duck and sweet potato jerky treats. But exactly what is causing the illnesses remains a mystery. “To date, testing for contaminants in jerky treats has not revealed a cause for the illnesses,” Martine Hartogensis, a deputy director for the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a new report. “Despite these warnings, we have continued to receive reports of illnesses in both cats and dogs.”

The FDA has been actively investigating consumer complaints about jerky pet treats causing illness in dogs and in some cats. As of September 24, 2013, over 3,600 dogs and 10 cats have reportedly become ill from eating jerky pet treats. At least two class action lawsuits have been filed, one against Del Monte subsidiary Milo's Kitchen which sells Chicken Jerky Dog Treats made in China. The suit alleges that the dog treats kill dogs and make them sick.

A $5 million class action lawsuit was also filed against Nestlé Purina Petcare Co, alleging the company's Waggin’ Train Yam Good chicken-wrapped treats causes kidney failure in dogs.

According to an FDA Fact Sheet, the treats are sold as jerky tenders or strips and are made with chicken, duck, sweet potato, dried fruit, and in combinations of these ingredients. Product samples have been tested for contaminants known to cause the symptoms and illnesses reported in pets including Salmonella, metals, pesticides, and antibiotics, and were screened for other chemicals and poisonous compounds. Nutritional composition analyses have been conducted including fatty acids, crude fiber, glycerol, protein, ash and moisture, and other excess nutrients. The purpose of nutritional composition testing is to verify the presence of ingredients listed on the label. To date, none of the tests have revealed the cause of the illnesses.

My beautiful, healthy 3yo pug, Pinky died after eating MILOS KITCHEN CHICKEN JERKY TREATS. these treats have MADE IN USA stamped twice on front of the pkg 2 make consumers feel safe. But they're not! They're POISON!!! my sweet girl meant the world 2 me & 2 know she died because of a treat I gave her has been almost unbearable. All these companies care about is money. No pet parent would ever willingly give their babies tainted treats. I would like to find the people @ these companies that knew their product was possibly deadly & hold them down while I force feed them their own treats. They have devastated my family by causing the death of our precious baby!

My border collie took ill after eating Waggin' Train duck jerky & also yam treats. I stopped the treats after reading on line that people were saying that their dogs were getting sick after eating the duck jerky. I also mentioned these articles to the store personnel at Petsmart where & purchased these products, but they kept them on the shelves but I did not buy any more.

My dog then got very lethargic & started vomiting a yellow bile mixed with grass. I thought that he was eating the grass because he felt ill - litle did I know. Tests showed reduced kidney function & he started to go into renal failure. I brought him to the vet several times a week to be hydrated & even took him to a second vet who was equipped to x-ray him & the diagnosis was confirmed. He lingered until he was too weak to even raise his head, just feebly wag his tail & lick my hand when a I went to pet him. We finally had to relieve his suffering at 8 yrs. of age.

July 20, 2013, our 7 year old cairn terrier, Gabi, died after a five day stint that first started as general lethargy, then became more severe. Two vet hospital, five day stays, nearly $5000 inn vet bills could not save her. We were heart broken. All because of tainted Milo's Kitchen treats [apparently]. Always healthy, Gabi's death was shocking and unexplainable until reading about this dog treat issue. Makes sense now.

Is anyone involved in the class action suit? If so, can you pass information onto me? Thanks.

Sorry for anyone [human and pet] who have suffered because of this situation.

My very healthy 12 year old dog got incredible sick one day after eating Milo's kitchen dog treats. The vet thought it was Lyme disease. He got worse and worse and ended up with lymphoma and dying 2 months later. I know it was those treats. Milo's kitchen is bad bad stuff. A year later and I am still so upset.

I occasionally give my dog and all three cats some chicken jerky treats I bought at Costco. Two of my cats are 7 month old kittens. The smaller one started suffering from the lethargy and decreased appetite about two weeks ago. I assumed it was from a tussle he got in with the neighbor's cat right about the time his symptoms started. I thought the jerky from Costco was safe as it didn't come from China, but I read yesterday that it was on the recall list. I no longer have the bag it came in, so I don't know what brand it is.

Yesterday afternoon, I noticed that my kitten's abdomen is now looking distended, but his appetite is starting to pick up a bit. We'll be going to the vet tomorrow.

My Shih Tzu, Sophie, died almost 3 years ago at the age of 2. She had internal bleeding and was treated for 5 weeks before passing away. At the time, the vet couldn't figure out what the problem was. We gave her the Waggin Trail Chicken Jerky often. Of course, at that time we didn't know there was a problem.

My dog got severely sick last year and on a emergency trip to vet he was diagnosed with a chemical type of sickness
He was given a stool sample.....a diet while sick and medicine to take. This was all after being given Milo's chicken jerky strips for a period of time. Purchased at Walmart always. I did not know NOT to continue using this product but did stop while he was mending. After he recovered he did not get them for awhile due to my budget cut. Two weeks ago I saw a new flavor and just this last Friday October 18 I bought a bag of duck jerky treats while in New Mexico and he is now sick again. These came from Del Monte. Symptoms include

Our dog, Bella, has been sick for a month: decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea -- sometimes with blood or mucous -- increased water consumption and increased urination. She has been to the vet and they did not know what was wrong with her. We are lucky she is alive; the vet bills mounted up to $1000. We thought she ate grass or bad water when she was outside. But we have always given her chicken jerky not knowing it was bad for her.
