Cipro Side Effects Misdiagnosed as Rheumatoid Arthritis

. By
Winston-Salem, NCPhoebe took the prescribed dose of Cipro ( a ten-day treatment) in early 2008 for a sinus infection. It cleared up the infection but caused horrible and likely irreparable side effects. "I want to see this drug taken off the market," says Phoebe. "I think it is hurting a lot of people and severely affecting the lives of older people like me".

Cipro VictimJust a few days after she finished Cipro, Phoebe woke up one morning and could barely get out of bed." My wrist was swollen and painful and my right leg and hip was excruciating," says Phoebe. "It seemed like I hurt everywhere; what is even more strange is that I never had joint pain before. I ended up going to the doctor and he thought I had rheumatoid arthritis (RA). But how could I get RA overnight? He prescribed prednisone but I was back in his office a few weeks later. I couldn't lift my arms above my shoulders, nothing had improved. My main problem was my wrist: it was extremely swollen and painful—I couldn't even use it.

He ordered more blood tests and sent me home with another prescription—the prednisone was driving crazy, it made me nervous and edgy. On my next visit I was given an injection of cortisone for my swollen wrist and the swelling finally subsided.

I blame Cipro for all these ailments because later on I took Levaquin for some other infection. At that time I was getting ready to go to California to see my sister, she was having surgery and I wanted to be by her side. But the morning after I had the first dose of Levaquin I woke up to the same symptoms all over again, so I had to cancel my trip. That was really agonizing.

Cipro and Levaquin: Ruptured Tendon?

I was never told that I had a ruptured tendon but I am sure that is what I have in my wrist. And I don't understand why it never went away. I talked to my doctor about Cipro and Levaquin and its association with all my joint problems; I told him that I likely had a ruptured tendon but he didn't think these antibiotic drugs would cause the damage. But even now I still have pain in my right leg and hip and when I get up and try to walk I am stiff.

I looked up these drugs on the Internet to see if there were any side effects. I was surprised: I read about a man who had similar symptoms and he couldn't even work. It ruined his life. I am worried because I live alone; I was scared to death that I wouldn't be able to care for myself when my wrist was so bad. Thank goodness it is better but I really have a hard time walking. My right leg is weak and hurts and I look like a robot when I do walk. I even have a limp. Strangely, sometimes my feet feel different, like they don't want to bend.

Cipro lawsuits

A lawyer said I need to have a diagnosis of a ruptured or torn tendon to pursue a lawsuit but I don't know if it will show up now, more than a year later. In hindsight, I wish I had insisted on further tests, to show torn or ruptured tendons. One day when I was leaving the doctor's office he said nonchalantly that I didn't have RA, but he still didn't know what was wrong with me. I don't know if they were trying to negate the fact that they gave me a bad drug."

Phoebe's misdiagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis is cause for concern: how many other people, particularly the elderly, have been misdiagnosed? And getting the wrong medications? If you have taken Cipro, Levaquin or Avelox and have suffered side effects similar to Phoebe, insist on getting tests—you may have torn or ruptured tendons. And you may qualify for a lawsuit.

On June 17, 2012 I took two Cipro, and my life ended....I was attacked immediately within minutes, and I went down hill from there. I have nerve damage all over my body, including my face. Went completely blind in a matter of months, passed muscle tissue in my urine for 18 months. I finally had my dna tested. WOW !!! DAMAGE DONE !!!! SHAME, SHAME,SHAME ON BIG PHARMA !!!!! They know it too. My mitochondrial dna was melted, mutated. My specialist freaked out. She was worried about the children, if I had them , they would surely have autism.PLEASE I URGE EVERYONE PLEASE DON'T TAKE THAT POISON.

I have had rheumatoid arthritis for 15 years and the biologic infusions I take suppress my immunities. I also have chronic bronchitis. Cipro is one of the few stronger antibiotics that help me. I believe that there is a rheumatoid factor in the blood that is the definitive for diagnosing RA. Sometimes doctors will diagnose without it being present. I hope cipro stays on the market. I did have a tendon swell once after taking it and it is listed as a possible side effect, but what about the side effect of not being able to breathe with severe bronchitis turning into pneumonia?

I was given Cup to for an infection in 2011. Three days in I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a truck. Joints so painful I don't know how I got out of bed much less to to work everyday (i work construction). Skin lesions on head, ears, knees and penis. Prescribed nsaid with no relief on four consecutive Dr visits. I was referred to rheumatologist. He tested me for RA, fibromyalgia, Psoriatic arthritis and SYFALIS! All tests negative. Prescribed prednisone and had relief in hours but was short lived. I've taken Methotrexate, naproxen and now Otezla. Xrays show no damage to joints. Why and how can I have so much pain with no damage? Reading others reaction to drug and its becoming clear its the Cipro. Still in construction I have a 6 year old and a 5 year old and in pain everyday.

I was given cipro on 6-04-13 for a UTI. I questioned the doctor's order because I had never taken Cipro before and ..... well something just felt wrong about it. However, I took the pills a few days after I picked them up from the pharmacy. After four days I went to the "doc in a box down the street" because I developed a sore throat and could barely swallow...I was told I had a sinus infection. After going home to take a shower and hit the bed, I was horrified to see my thighs! I had purple streaks running down my thighs. I quickly returned to the doc in a box and the was told I was having an allergic reaction to the cipro. Well months later (September 2,2013) I have accumulated $40,000 in medical bills and awake very day with crippling pain. I was a fit beautiful mom and wife, just a month prior to cipro I was cooking in heels for 6 hours while entertaining for the Kentucky Derby. Now I can't stand or close my hands. Cipro did it, please listen to your gut and do not take this drug. Please, for your family ....... Please.

About a year ago I suddenly developed moderate to severe unexplained pain in my shoulders, wrists, fingers, knees and feet. I had taken a course of cipro for a bladder infection within the same month. I suffered for several months, seeing many ER doctors and specialists. I was later diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis - not because my blood tests were positive (because they were actually negative) but because my symptoms seemed consistent with the disease. I am now taking methotrexate and plaquenil and feel 100% better. However I still wonder, do I in fact have RA? Or was it a side effect of the Cipro?

My story is just the opposite. I have been diagnosed w/ RA for 9 years, and have suffered from it for far longer. About 4 months ago, some skin cancers were excised, and my dermatologist prescribed a course of Cipro to keep infection at bay. A week later, I felt better than I have felt in over a decade, and have not received infusion therapy for RA in more than 3 months now. Things aren't perfect, but a steady underlying pain level of 3-4 that I had internalized is GONE, as are the extraordinary joint pain and swellings. Now, it could be that any antibiotic would do this, so Cipro may not be the only pathway to this relief.

Recently I had 7 days of cipro, for a kidney infection. I'm just a week later and I have swollen, stiff and painful fingers (both hands). My hands feel really heavy. Ankles are both swollen as well, but the pain is not that bad as it is in my hands.

Long live to Cipro and antibiotics!

I had severe Adverse Drug Reaction to Cipro in September 2008. I was given Cipro for a severe stomach bug of unknown origin, caught while moving cross country. On the 3rd pill my arms, legs, and right shoulder began to spasm, hands and feet drawing up like claws. Long story short I wound up with 10 contrast-dye MRIs revealing 12 partial tears of various tendons in legs, hips, arms, shoulder and am now on Social Security Disability with an uncertain future. Thankfully the FDA was forced about that time to finally put the 'black box' warning on all the Fluroquinolones but many doctors are still in denial about the bad side effects and some have said to me ''I give Cipro out like candy."
