Suffolk, VA In the first six months of 2007, the US Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled over seven million pounds of red meat. And the number of cases of people getting sick from contaminated beef is growing as fast as E. coli in an overcrowded cattle pen.

Mulino, OR After her ordeal with the beef ecoli recall, Diane will never again buy meat in a grocery store. And for now, she can't even imagine eating another hamburger in a restaurant. "I buy all meat from my butcher now and even though it's more expensive, at least I know where my food is coming from," she says.

Beef ecoli: a Growing Concern

Washington, DC On its website, the US Food Safety and Inspection Service reports that, for the last three years, it found 0.17 percent of overall raw ground beef samples tested positive for E. coli O157:H7. That report was updated February 9, 2007, three months before the latest beef ecoli recall that now includes more than six million pounds of ground meat.
