MRI Health Problems: "It's Like Being On Fire"

. By
Starkville, MSMore and more people are discovering that they are allergic to MRI gadolinium-based contrast dyes. Unfortunately, they are discovering this well after the dye has been used and has caused serious health problems.

Barbara H. says that when she was injected with the MRI contrast dye, she immediately felt a burning sensation. "I got hot right away. I could feel it in my nose and my face and all over my body. It felt like my whole body was on fire. I didn't know what was going on."

Contrast AgentHowever, Barbara's problems did not stop after her MRI. In fact, her condition got worse. "I have little spots in my eyes, that was the first thing that happened. Then, my urine turned red. It burns when I go to the bathroom. My skin is rough and is peeling between my fingers and on the inside of my hands and legs. I have red spots all over me and I itch from all over my head right down to my feet. Everywhere.

"Also, I have pain in my ankles, my hip bone and down my legs. When I get up in the morning, I'm stiff. Some mornings, I can barely get out of bed, because it hurts so much. Sometimes I walk around and it loosens up a bit, but I'm still very stiff. I didn't have hip pain until I had the MRI."

Barbara says that she had no idea what was wrong with her until she saw a report on television about someone who had an allergic reaction to gadolinium-based contrast dyes. That person had the same symptoms Barbara had, including blood-red urine.

Even though her MRI was a couple of months ago, Barbara says she still has pain and other symptoms of an allergic reaction to the dye, including numbness in her hands.

"My skin is horrible," Barbara says. "I have rash-like spots all over my legs and my thighs. My hands and fingers are still peeling. I think it might have been a kidney problem because my sides were sore. I went to the ER because I hurt so much and they just looked at me and said, 'My Lord, what's wrong with you?' I told them I had an allergic reaction to that contrast dye and they gave me a shot and medication for it. I'm still on the pain medication and taking Vistaril [a drug used to treat allergic reactions]."

Like many people, Barbara says that the health problems caused by the dye outweigh the dye's benefits.

"They should ban that contrast dye and take it off the market," Barbara says. "If something harms a human being, it shouldn't be used."

If you or someone you love was harmed by the use of gadolinium-based contrast dye during an MRI, you may be eligible to join a lawsuit against the maker of the dye. Contact a lawyer to discuss your legal options.

I am suppose to be going into get an MRI on my head using the contrast dye this Sunday July 31, 2016 and now I am not sure if this is a great idea?? Hmm...had an MRI a month ago without the dye and I was fine...no issues besides one lesion that they are watching. Just wondering if I should even bother. This doesn't seem to be worth the risk?? Does it make that much of a difference: what they are able to see??

I had an MRI without contrast in February and have been burning up all over and with flu-like symptoms ever since. Look online, I am certainly not the only person this has happened to.

MRI is dangerous but the side-effects are not documented as doctors just say 'never heard of it, probably a virus'. If this happens to everyone, it never gets logged.

Secondly, I think many reactions are attributed to the dye, when in actual fact, people have horrendous, long-term, debilitating and life-altering symptoms from MRI without contrast dye. It's time the dangers were exposed. I was told by the radiographer, 'it's safer than an ultrasound'. Yeah right. Dropped out of uni and been in bed for 2 months so far, no improvement. Life is over. Very safe indeed!

When I had an MRI done I didn't have any contrast but still got a reaction. My skin and my insides started burning and I felt hot all over. I started feeling real nauseated because of the heat sensation going on by the time it was over. When I got out my face was so red and felt sick for a while afterwards.

My face is peeling off every day. Are you guys saying this may never stop. I had the MRI on Tuesday of last week. This is bollux! I am pissed that there was no warning or disclosure provided prior to test that you may have an allergic reaction to it. It took awhile for me to realize that allergy to the contrast is why my face was itching. Crazy!!

Had a brain MRI today.
Have had 2 others previously... never a problem.
Today as the liquid entered, through the IV, my hand started burning intensely.
I screamed for them to take our the needle and within a minute the hand felt normal.
Could it be that the gadolinium was shot in too rapidly?
Will try at a different hospital.
These clowns (CPMC) did not seem very concerned about my well being.

I had a MRI of my head..its been almost two years. Three times a year I break out in hot itchy skin. This is on my neck eyebrows and around my mouth..its extremely uncomfortable, every time this happens it lasts a day or two longer. This is a reaction to the contrast dye..My Doctor told me, I could never have the contrast dye again..nothing on how to control these outbreaks..

Barbara I had MRI scan in May this year for confirmation of Spinal Canal Stenosis, During the last ten minutes of the scan I got extremely hot all along my back and arms, two days later could'nt get out of bed, 4 days later came down with flu like virus with back pain intensified, water works problems and gastrititus, have been off work for three weeks.radiology technician stated it was hot due to lateral scanning sequence, My doctor say's MRI unlikely to cause any problem???
