Only in the last few decades has the industrialized world taken the risks of asbestos seriously by phasing asbestos out in certain products, and asbestos abatement procedures for the renovation industry has reflected the adoption of asbestos as a carcinogen, and a truly hazardous material.

However, new homes usually feature an enhanced level of protection for the consumer, separate from their home insurance policy--a home warranty that the home is built properly according to updated codes. Some contractors self-insure, while others rely on third-party providers. Sadly, having a home warranty—regardless of the provider or the builder—does not always carry the peace of mind one would ordinarily hope for or expect.

Calgary, AB A 74-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in securities fraud. Specifically, the accused was alleged to have scammed investors across North America in a $37.5 million Ponzi scheme that a judge said, "devastated many lives." Although this case of stock investment fraud is not on the same magnitude as Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme, many people lost money in the securities investment fraud.

Edmonton, AB Neither Salima nor her prescribing doctor had any idea that Allopurinol, a treatment for gout, is one of the leading causes of Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). "None of the doctors at the hospital could make a diagnosis until a dermatologist was consulted," Salima says. "Soon as he saw me and knew I had taken this drug, he knew I had SJS and that it was going to get a lot worse before I got better."

There have been many historic disputes between countries over boating accidents, fishing rights and trespassing charges. The potential for jurisdictional dispute is especially high when an accident happens aboard a cruise ship, as was the case in 2007 when a Canadian woman slipped and fell while holidaying aboard a Carnival Cruise liner.
