Long-Acting Zyprexa Gets Limited Ok by FDA

Washington, DC: The FDA decided Wednesday that the injectable form of Zyprexa, a drug manufactured by Eli Lilly & Co. was safe to use for some patients with Schizophrenia. This decision was made by the panel, which is comprised of outside medical experts, states that there are restrictions that come along with this approval by the FDA regarding the use of the long-acting drug due to past issues with Eli Lilly & Co. regarding the link between over prescribing of the medication for disorders not approved by the FDA and an increased risk of suicide.

Fayetteville, TN: When Sarah D. was only a child she was put on Zyprexa to help control the mood swings associated with her bipolar disorder. Beth (Sarah's mother) says that they tried several drugs, but from around age eight to age fourteen, Sarah took Zyprexa. According to both Beth and Sarah, it was only a matter of months after her prescription began before Sarah started cutting herself.

Washington, DC: The news is getting harder and harder to ignore. More drugs are being linked to an increased risk of violence and suicide. While some people would argue that, at least in the case of Zyprexa, it is the underlying condition of the patient that increases the risk of suicide, there are more drugs being linked to this risk, making it more difficult to deny that medications can cause people to commit suicidal acts.

Rockford, IL Sarah Thompson's (not her real name) husband committed suicide almost six years ago after taking Zyprexa for less than three months. Even before David committed suicide, he experienced some of the stigma that comes with taking Zyprexa and attempting suicide. Thompson has also had her own problems, dealing with the reactions of people around her to her late husband's death.

Rockford, IL: Sarah Thompson's (not her real name) husband, David, committed suicide on March 7, 2002, after taking Zyprexa for only three months. Thompson says she has no doubt that Zyprexa changed her husband and altered his thinking. The coroner may agree with Thompson—on David's death certificate, next to "How injury occurred," he wrote, "Prescribed Zyprexa, hung himself."

Louisville, KY The family members of people who committed suicide after taking Zyprexa are understandably upset that they were not made aware of the risks associated with taking the drug. Patients as young as nine years old have reported having suicidal thoughts after taking Zyprexa and some adults have committed suicide.

Franklinton, LA Many patients who are given prescription medications want to be good patients, so they dutifully follow their doctor's advice and take their meds. Unfortunately, in some cases, such as Zyprexa, the medication can make the patient a lot worse. Not realizing that the problem is the medication, the doctor increases the dosage, compounding the problem. The patient, not wanting to question the expert's opinion, is stuck on a vicious cycle of taking the drug, having side effects, taking an increased dosage and having even worse problems.

Eli Lilly Putting Zyprexa Patients At Risk of Suicide

Rockville, MD Now we know there is a corelleation between Zyprexa and suicide, people who may not have realized that their suicidal thoughts were related to Zyprexa, now understand that they may not have been in control of their thoughts and actions at all. Unfortunately, some patients, including youth, have committed suicide while taking this medication and even though their families can file lawsuits against Eli Lilly, nothing will bring these victims back.
