Vancouver, BC A Canadian class-action case filed against pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on behalf of women whose babies were born with SSRI birth defects is set to begin against a rising tide of concern about the use of antidepressants by pregnant women.

Vancouver, BC A Canadian woman’s Paxil birth defects case against the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been certified as a class action in early December. “We have been contacted by at least 20 potential class members across Canada since the case was certified,” says Paxil attorney David Klein.

Washington, DC The problem with any medication is—unless it's completely holistic—it's not natural. While most people wouldn't bat an eye at taking an aspirin for a headache, it remains an invasion of the natural order with which we came into the world by ingesting something, however slight, that's outside the bounds of the five food groups. Alcohol comes into play here, as do medications of various personalities—things we take to cure a minor toothache, or drugs that keep us alive or allow us to function in society. But while we may not have come out of the womb that way, our babies are now beginning to—such is the prevalence of antidepressants and challenges like Paxil side effects.

Boston, MA When it comes to prescribing medication to pregnant women, there are many concerns about side effects and how the medications will affect a fetus; but at what point should concerns about Paxil side effects come into play when dealing with someone who could potentially become pregnant? Some studies suggest a risk of Paxil birth defects—such as Paxil heart defects—in infants exposed to Paxil while in the womb, causing some concern about the risk of prescribing such an antidepressant to a woman who is pregnant. But what about a teenage female who could one day, well in the future, become pregnant?

Harlingen, TX A Paxil lawsuit has been filed against GlaxoSmithKline, alleging babies suffered Paxil birth defects as a result of being exposed to the antidepressant prior to birth. Paxil side effects in infants reportedly include not only a risk of primary pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) but also various other defects, including craniosynostosis, oral clefts and other birth defects.
