Virgin Atlantic Flight Makes Emergency Landing

Smoke Behind Cockpit Forces Landing in Ireland

Just 20 minutes after take-off, the pilots of a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340 enroute to Chicago from London requested an emergency landing in Ireland. Smoke was detected behind the cockpit.

All 156 passengers disembarked without incident, and spent the night in Shannon, Ireland.

Initial investigations into the cause of the smoke showed 2 wires in the galley behind the cockpit to have shorted. The aircraft will remain grounded until Airbus officials have examined it.
