Train Derailment, Acid Leak

Thousands of people in Lafayette, LA, including 161 residents of a nursing home, had to be evacuated when a train derailment caused hydrochloric acid to leak from the train and form a toxic cloud over the area.

Residents were given two minutes as police went door-to-door to make sure everyone was notified.

Approximately 10,000 gallons of the acid was spilled, forming a toxic yellow pool at the derailment site. Hydrochloric acid can cause respiratory problems and eye and skin irritations.
