Tankless Water Heaters Recalled

En EspaƱol [CALENTADOR DE AGUA SIN TANQUE]

On February 21, 2007, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with CSA International, Rheem Manufacturing Company (Rheem) and Paloma Industries, Inc., announced a voluntary recall to repair more than 42,000 Power Vent tankless water heaters. The heaters may pose a carbon monoxide poisoning hazard.

It is important that consumers know the air filter door for these water heaters must be in place to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning -- which can cause death.

Indoor models of the Power Vent 199,900 BTUH tankless water heaters are recalled. The brands and model numbers are listed below and are located on the front of the unit and the rating plate. The water heaters have a cream jacket or gray jacket enclosure with the piping on the top and bottom of the unit. The rating plate is a silver label located the front of the unit, in the lower right hand corner.

Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled water heaters immediately if the air filter door is not in place and contact their installer or Rheem Manufacturing Company. It is important that, regardless of the type of water heater used, every home should have a CO alarm (with working batteries) outside all sleeping areas.

Water Heater Recall a Tankless Job
Three brands of tankless hot water heaters have been identified as potential sources of deadly carbon monoxide emissions, prompting a voluntary recall of the systems by Rheem Manufacturing, and Paloma Industries Inc. before they make people sick - or worse.

Tankless Water Heaters Pose Lethal Hazard
Over 42,000 families may be at risk due to a potentially lethal defect in tankless gas water heaters. Some 42,200 Power Vent 199,900 tankless gas water heaters that were sold from May 2004 to December 2006, were recalled in February 2007 after components in some units shifted during transit, potentially causing an air filter door to malfunction and lead to deadly carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in the home.

I'm a plumbing contractor in Southern California. In a large tract of new homes, less than three years old, the builder installed Rheem tankless gas water heaters, model number RTG-64DVLN. The whole tract suffered a power loss and surge. I responded to four different customers without hot water. All four of them where told that the parts needed were not covered by the warranty because they were damaged by the power serge. The parts would cost them over $700. Not one of the four homes lost any other appliances to the serge, computers, TVs, etc. Two of my customers actually paid out the $700 plus. I installed their new parts and noticed that the part numbers were different than the original parts. It makes me wonder if there was a design correction.

I have had my Tankless water heater for over 10 years with out an incident, I had an error code appear on the remote display, I called paloma and they shipped a new processor board overnight at not charge. I swapped it out as per the instructions and it worked perfectly ever since! Now going on 15 years! Poster California must have not installed the unit correctly to have it leak all over, then to post a 2nd time 3 years later, must just be a sour person to begin with... sound more like his choice of plumbers is his real issue.

I have substantial costs with plumbers to get the water heaters to work. My tenants have to deal with cold showers and workman in their units constantly. The lack of hot water has created ill will with the tenants in a closely knit resort community. Rheem has discontinued the model, and the model has been recalled. Rheem is of no help. The water heaters are lemons.
