Tainted Cheese Linked to TB Cases in California

Illegal, unpasteurized dairy products are causing the re-emergence of a rare form of tuberculosis in Southern California, and particularly in Hispanic immigrants in San Diego County.

The dairy products include very popular items such as queso fresco cheese, which is made from cattle infected with the mycobacterium bovis strain of TB. Children who consume contaminated products are particularly at risk. However, anyone who eats fresh cheeses sold by street vendors, or that has crossed into the U.S. from Mexico illegally, is at risk.

This particular strain of TB is not only ancient, but drug resistant, and associated with a higher than normal mortality rate.

Officials are cracking down on the illegal importation of the cheeses, but the demand for Hispanic cheeses is high in California.
