Study Shows PVC Shower Curtains Pose Serious Health Threat

PVC Shower Curtains Should be Taken Off The Market

The Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ), has found that shower curtains made of plastic polyvinyl chloride, also called PVC or vinyl, may be harmful to people's health.

The consumer watchdog group tested new shower curtains purchased from Bed Bath & Beyond, Kmart, Sears, Target and Wal-Mart and found a total of 108 different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) phthalates and organotins were released into the air over 28 days. Seven of the chemicals detected are classified as hazardous air pollutants by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Clean Air Act.

VOCs can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, nausea, loss of coordination and headaches, and one Canadian study has shown that they can also cause learning disabilities, headaches and loss of concentration in children of mothers exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy.
