Spironolactone

Used for congestive heart failure that was supposed to save lives, Spironolactone also caused dozens of deaths from a side effect when doctors began prescribing it more widely.

A major study five years ago found that adding spironolactone to the standard treatments cut the death rate by 30 percent in people with serious heart failure. However, when prescription rates for spironolactone increased fivefold, and hospitalizations and deaths from high potassium tripled.

Physicians need to be careful who they prescribe the drug to, and need to carefully monitor for potassium buildup.

I have been on spironolactone for almost a year and the symptoms were major rash and sore nipples. It took me a while to figure out this drug caused my problems. Now that I stopped taking the drug, the rash has lessened but still erupts, and my sore nipples are less sore. However, when I was checking the obvious rash on my face, limbs, private parts and chest, I notice my breast had increased in size. Doctors said stay off the drug and sent me for a mammogram to check for cancer based on the extra tissue in my breast. Doctors also state this is a known issue.

I was on Spironolactone for about 10-12 years for severe acne and the side effects were tolerable up until almost 2 years ago then I started getting horrible acid reflux. It all started there then I had my gallbladder removed in May of this year. Just last week I was diagnosed with gastroparesis which is delayed gastric emptying of the stomach. I continued to take the medication because it cleared up my skin well not realizing what damage it was causing. I finally stopped taking the medication in Sep. of this year. It would burn the heck out of my throat and my doctors told me to just take it with food. I've had numerous dr. appts. and have been in severe discomfort for almost 2 years which is uncalled for. More people need to be warned of these harsh side effects about Spironolactone.

After two weeks on Spironolactone my hair starting falling out at the roots. I did some research online and found that other people had the same reaction. I immediately stopped taking the drug and called my dermatologist, but the hair kept falling out. This is very emotional for a woman to go through.

I began experiencing crippling pain to have neuropathy-like symptoms in my feet, including burning, painless twitching, stinging pain in my big toes, proceeded eventually by muscle spasms in my feet and arms. approximately 3 -4 months after taking Spironolactone. A few months later I developed debilitating pain/tightness along my clavicles and in my shoulders. I can't lift my shoulders or pull them back to kind of stretch/open up the chest area without EXTREME INTENSE pain. It's like all the muscles have shortened. The pain has spread into my upper arms, neck, and head as well. Other syptoms have been:

- blurry vision
- breast pain /swelling
- Swollen, painful and tender lymph
glands in my neck and armpit, which
prevents me from resting or sleeping
comfortably.
- Difficulty swallowing
- nausea / vomiting
- Sweating
- Itchy skin and rash on my body
- Confusion /short term memory loss

This has been a very debilitating experience and has altered my quality of life.

I was diagnosed with stage 4 cirrhosis in 2007. I was prescribed spironalactone then and have been taking it for fluid retention for 11 years. I had a TIPS procedure done in 2009. I was instructed by my Dr to continue taking both spironalactone and lasix ever since. My blood work has shown high levels of potassium several times over the years and I have developed breasts. Do I have any recourse in this situation? I truly believe the spironalactone is the cause of several of my health issues.

I was given Spironolactone combined with HCTZ a year a half ago and I have devoloped gynecomastia....my left breast is very painful with hard masses and at least 2x's larger than my right. I had a mammogram and an ultra sound recently and my primary care doctor confirmed that I had gynecomastia... I am faced with a lifetime of possible surgery and pain. I am a 68 year old male and this is very embrassing, not to mention of my 5 fold increased risk for breast cancer. This product needs to be taken off the market and those who have suffered compensated. Can you help me.

In 2014 I was prescribed spironolactone as a diuretic and to treat congestive heart failure. Within months I developed enlarged tender breast. I was not told this was a side effect of the drug. I have since changed to lasiks when necessary but have not had reduction in the breast enlargement. It is embarrassing and has caused me much concern. Not to mention the fact that there can be breast complications down the road.

I was put on Aldactone 1 year ago... I now have Gynecomastia in both breasts. I will have to go through breast reduction surgery because it not only is painful and ugly but it increases my chances of breast cancer 5 times the normal level... I really feel that I should be compensated for all I have gone through and have to go through with the surgery.

Thank you,

Greg

Hi,my name is Ronnie Royster and I was prescribed Spironolactone about 12 years ago for congestive heart failure. I developed enlarged breasts and about 3 years ago my doctor took me of the medication. He put me on Lasix instead and told me that the spironolactone helped contribute to me having the enlarged breasts problem. I had gynomastia surgery about 3 years ago to help with the problem. This is all in my medical charts at my primary care physican's office.

Hi, my name is Jeff, I'm 63 years old and am recovering from Hepatic Cirrohsis and was prescribed spironolactone and Lasix, presumably for diuretic reasons, but have experienced painful enlarged breasts after 2 years on this drug. I am not a vain person, but I think I am in need of breast reduction surgery, as I had bladder cancer surgery 3 years ago and don't want to risk breast cancer. My condition is a documented side effect of spironolactone use, and my Gastroenterologist halved my dose, but did not cancel it. What am I to do?
