Oral Moxifloxacin-Containing Medicines Restricted by European Medicines Agency

Restrictions Based on Concerns Over Liver Safety

The European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has concluded a safety review of Moxifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and moxifloxacin-containing medicines for oral use. Consequently, they issued a recommendation restricting its use based on their findings of increased risk for liver damage.

EMEA has concluded that in Europe, these medicines should only be prescribed in the treatment of acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia when other antibiotics cannot be used or have failed. The Agency also recommended strengthening the warnings for oral moxifloxacin medicines.
