Big Pharma Facing Allegations of Deceptive Marketing of Addictive Opioid Medications
Santa Clara, CA: Big pharmaceutical companies are being sued for allegations of deceptive marketing of opioid painkillers including Oxycontin and Percocet, which, lawyers charge, played a role in the prescription opioid and heroin addiction epidemic sweeping across the US. Plaintiffs lawyers are also teaming up with state and local governments to bring cases against big pharma.
The lawsuits contend that several drug companies inundated counties in New York, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Chicago and California with painkillers by deceiving doctors and the public about the safety of these drugs.
The allegations in the main, contend that the makers of opioid medications intentionally engaged in a targeted marketing campaign, deceptively claiming that their painkillers could be prescribed non-addictively. However, patients became addicted to the prescription drugs and in some cases substituted and became addicted to heroin, when their prescriptions drugs were not available.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs are likening the opioid marketing deception with that made big tobacco companies, and challenging the supposed safety of prescribing these medications in a “non-addictive” way.
