Monster Energy Drink Deaths and Hospitalizations

Lawsuits have been filed against Monster Beverage alleging Monster Energy Drinks are unreasonably dangerous. Plaintiffs allege their loved ones died as a result of ingesting Monster Energy Drinks due to elevated caffeine levels contained in the drinks. One high-profile lawsuit was filed by the family of Anais Fournier, who alleged Fournier's cardiac arrest was the result of drinking two 24-ounce cans of Monster Energy in less than 24 hours.

Monster Energy Drinks

According to reports, Monster Energy beverages contain around 240 mgs of caffeine per serving. Some experts, however, say the caffeine levels are even higher because the drinks contain stimulants that are not listed as caffeine. These ingredients are known as "masked caffeine," caffeine that is even more highly concentrated than that found in coffee. Furthermore, some energy drink containers may contain more than a single serving. Although a safe caffeine limit for adults is around 400 mgs per day, for children, the safe ingestion rate is between 45-85 mgs per day.

Caffeine Overdose

Caffeine overdose has been linked to serious health problems, including arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, or myocardial infarction, which can lead to death. A recent study published by the Canadian Journal of Cardiology (3/26/15) suggested energy drinks could increase the risk of heart problems, even in youth who appear healthy or have no apparent underlying heart issues.

A study published by Pediatrics in February 2011 also suggested that adolescents who consume energy drinks are at an increased risk of serious heart problems. That risk is reportedly even more pronounced in adolescents who have heart problems, seizures, or are on certain medications. The same study found that of the 5,448 US caffeine overdoses reported in 2007, 46 percent involved adolescents younger than 19.

FDA Energy Drink Regulations

The FDA does not require energy drink companies, including Monster, to list the exact amount of caffeine on ingredient labels because the products are regulated as dietary food supplements instead of food. Energy drinks are also sold as nutritional supplements, even though they may not have any nutritional value. Because of this regulation, energy drinks may exceed the FDA-mandated limit of 71 milligrams of caffeine for a 12-ounce soda.

As well, the FDA does not allow soda to have more than 0.02 percent caffeine, but energy drinks aren't subject to this limit.

Monster Energy Lawsuits

Lawsuits have been filed against the makers of monster energy drinks, alleging consumers were not adequately warned about the risks of ingesting the drinks. Three lawsuits have recently been settled for undisclosed amounts.

One high-profile lawsuit was recently expected to go to trial. That lawsuit was the case of Anais Fournier, who was 14 years old when she ingested two Monster Energy drinks in a 24-hour period. Fournier died of cardiac arrest. The lawsuits of Alex Morris and Shane Felts also recently went to court and were reportedly settled for undisclosed amounts.

I have been consuming since 2009 and I still purchase (Mean Bean). I love the product. Remember to drink only in moderation as anything that you drink, eat, smoke, in large quantities can be considered as abuse. People please also realize that children do not need to consume any energy drink and not be monitored on what they consume, every one needs a limit. stay safe, be smart.

I have been drinking monster and various other energy drinks for years. Even hit 7 in one day one time. Over the past 6months I have had 2 java monsters a day in a 1-2 hr period 4 days a week for work. I haven't experienced many problems however I can note 3, and after the last I limit myself to 1 a day, accompanied with mtn dew, and lots of water. I gotta dizzy after drinking 7 that day a few years back. Recently after chugging one I had a small bout of anger,1month+ ago, however two weeks ago, with stress and 2 hours sleep I drank one and a few hours later passed out, after your body processes the food and some stored energy, it looks for something else, when monster has me speeding, with nothing on my stomach and 2 hrs sleep, it made me pass out. First blackout non drug related, and fell busted my nose and the stitches were horrible, getting the left side of your nose reattached! I am 25y.o. male in good health low body fat. However I from now on watch my intake and keep it to one per day. If I ever forget just have to look at my nose in the mirror!

I have been drinking Java monsters for years, and I haven't had any serious health issues, I think it's best to get your doctors advice on if your healthy enough to even drink monsters. They do contain allot of caffeine which could cause health issues in people that have underlying health issues.

Additionally in comparison to Monstery Energy's expected caffeine level of 240mg, keep in mind that the caffeine in a single cup of a Starbucks tall coffee is 260mg, a Venti 20 oz cup is 436mg and that anyone who consumes them is likely going to die based on the logic of this post. But I haven't seen any deaths related to the coffee shop and think that if someone wants to sue this energy drink company that they might want to grab hold of a different ingredient.

While I understand that it is possible for the ingredients to affect different people in different ways, it seems that a lot of people don't look at it that way. They only seek to place the blame somewhere. I have been drinking Monster energy drinks for 11 years, 8 years of that was spent in military server. My typical consumption ranged from 2-6 a day initially. One of my NCO's said she was concerned about the amount I drank and requested that I limited my consumption to two a day, which I did. I have since exited the military and now drink no more than 3 a day simply because going down to two a day as a routine helped save me money. I'm sure just like everything else in the world there are long term affects of drinking this beverage. But the issue's presented by the use of this product are likely due to pre-existing conditions agitated by the Energy drink and likely aren't something that affects an individual as a stand alone substance.

But hey, we have skeptics, and we got true believers. Skeptics are willing to look at the facts of the matter and make an unbiased opinion on the situation. True believers stick to their guns despite evidence proving otherwise. With the death toll being blamed on monster energy drinks being under 50 since its inception, I doubt that there is any credibility in the claims.

But then again this is likely the same as trying to explain god doesn't exist, if I talk to an imaginary person I'm crazy, but if I talk to god whom is also imaginary, I'm religious smdh.

I'm 13 and I've been drinking monster and other energy drink since I was eight all I've experienced only dry mouth and heart and chest pains

I have been drinking 3 to 5 monster energy drinks a day (every day) for the last 4 years. I am 47 yrs old and work 60 to 80 hrs a week. I have never felt better. It's all in how you use the energy drink. If you drink 3 or 4 and sit around and do nothing then it can make you feel bad. (And playing video games is not doing something energetic). So use your brain people would you take a sleeping pill and then drive across the country? (No you wouldn't)! Energy drinks are used as a supplement to give you the boost you need when doing something that is physically challenging.

I have been doing research and very intelligent men and women have said that it does have some unhealthy effects. Also, you people commenting about "blah blah blah, I've been drinking this for blah blah blah years" it shows that Energy drinks definitely affect you as a person. Furthermore, those who are being extremely rude about "getting a life" you obviously don't have one if you are wasting your time telling people what to do and not telling yourself to shut your trap. No need to get rude on a simple discussion.. :)

I've drank monster energy for 3 years now. I drink the low carb and khaos. Low carb doesn't have a limit, but khaos does (3 per day). The only thing i've noticed is high blood pressure. I dont have hbp when I dont drink them. I LOVE these things, but wish I could have a khaos with no caffine. These drinks (for me) are very addictive.

Phildorf. It's always easy to blame parents. It must be so easy to have altogether and have all the answers. Do you even have children much less teenagers. Parents don't always buy everything their children consume. My daughter drank 4 monsters back to back fortunately I don't have the same story to tell. You need to learn to be more sensitive. You need not to judge unless you've walked in someone else's shoes. I don't understand all the negativity and judgement all people of today's society. The words they choose as well. Is that your parents fault?? Grow up and quit thinking that everything is a parents fault.

I travelled over to visit my brother and family over the weekend, stayed in a lovely hotel but didn't sleep right my 1st night, the next morning when I awoke I drank some coke, went to a family fun day and bought myself a big yin of monster and a bottle of lucozade, I drink lucozade and coca cola on a daily basis. I was at the funday for most of the day then arrived at a pub for some dinner with family and had a alchopop, all of a sudden I started shaking , this horrible feeling came over me, I felt light headed and restless. I took myself away from the table and went into the bathroom and I started sweating, I was panicking I didn't know what was wrong with me I put it down to a panic attack, I paced the place for the next half hour I was all over the place and just thought I could cry. I asked my brother to bring me back to the hotel so o could rest but I knew as soon as I got in I was going to the hospital, just then I started having palpitations and I was shaking uncontrollably and again I started to panicking, I felt sick I felt confused I felt dizzy, as I arrived at a and e I couldn't speak right I was slurring my words and thought I was going to collapse.. It took me 5 hours for my blood pressure to settle and my heart rate to go down.. This drink needs health warnings. It ruined my time away and all u was tying to do was get a bit of energy to spend time with my family..

Currently have enlarged lymph nodes after drinking Monster. It started with the sour taste you usually get, but the taste stayed in my mouth and moved towards my neck. I'm pretty certain it was from the Monster I drank because that was the only thing I ate or drank that day.
