Class action status is being sought in the lawsuit filed on behalf of 400,000 Los Angeles-area residents who were forcibly sent to Mexico in the 1930s. The suit was filed against Los Angeles county and city officials who worked with federal immigration authorities to expel the alleged victims from the United States, which was in violation of their constitutional rights. The suit alleges that the plaintiffs, of whom an estimated 60% were U.S. citizens, were expelled in order to reduce job competition for "Americans" during the Depression, and to reduce the amount of money "that would have otherwise been spent to help aid destitute individuals of Mexican ancestry."
