Medennium SMARTPlug Linked to Eye Infections


Sarasota,FL: A recent study of the punctual plug the Medennium SMARTPlug, used in the treatment of dry eye, has revealed a tendency to infection leading to canaliculitis.

The study found that the incidence of canaliculitis was most prevalent in women, occurring on average at 2.7 years following insertion, and the authors noted that the infection can take several years to manifest. The study, a retrospective chart review of over 1000 patient seen at a clinic in Sarasota, FL, ran from 2002 to 2009. The authors noted that other reports have also been made citing infection associated with the SMARTPlug.

Based on their findings, the clinic where the study was done no longer uses the SMARTPlug for treatment of dry eye.
