McDonald’s “Step-iT” Activity Wristbands Recalled

- by

Washington, DC: McDonald’s is recalling about about 29 million Step It Activity Wristbands in the US and a further 3.6 million units in Canada following more than 70 reports of incidents, including seven reports of blisters, after wearing the wristbands. The wristbands are for children.

This recall involves “Step-iT” activity wristbands, which come in two styles, “Activity Counter” and a motion-activated “Light-up Band.” The Activity Counter comes in translucent plastic orange, blue or green and features a digital screen that tracks a child’s steps or other movement. The Light-up Band comes in translucent plastic red, purple, or orange and blinks light with the child’s movement.

Both styles of activity wristbands have a square face with the words “STEP-iT” printed on them and a button to depress and activate the wristband. The back of the square face contains the etched words “Made for McDonald’s.”

The wristbands were distributed exclusively by McDonald’s restaurants nationwide from August 9, 2016 to August 17, 2016 with Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals.

I, a grown adult, wore one with one of my friends daughter that we obtained from happy meals while on vacation in Anaheim. I felt one itchy blister then three the next day the entire area on my left wrist was blistered. I did not relate the wristband to that. The blisters itched so bad I scratched them, they opened and have left little white round shiny scars. Oh my! I saw the claims in regards to the Step Its and immediately texted my girlfriend and told her so she could tell her daughter not to wear one. I never went to the doctor as it was an itchy rash and I am a grown adult. I figured it was not life threatening, but it was irritating and did leave scarring...

My boy got one with his happy meal ran around the house all day showing it off then the next day when he woke up he came and told me and his mother that his bracket hurt him it sounds funny and st first I didn't understand until he showed us his wrist witch looked like he was burned but had also formed multiple blisters around his wrist we took the bracket from him and refused to return it. The blister healed in about four days but he said it hurt do bad he did not even want to bath for the first two days. I felt so bad for him.
