Lysteda Blood Clots

Lysteda, known generically as tranexamic acid, is used to treat menorrhagia (heavy periods). It is a non-hormonal drug approved by the FDA on November 13, 2009, and marketed by Ferring Pharmaceuticals. Lysteda is meant only for use during a woman's period and should not be used outside that time frame. According to the FDA, Lysteda works by stabilizing a protein that helps blood to clot.

yasminbirthcontrolpillyazsideeffects According to the Lysteda label, the risk of serious blood clots may increase when Lysteda is taken with hormonal contraceptives. The risk could further increase if the patient is taking a higher dose of birth control than normal, is overweight or smokes. Patients who have a blood clot or have ever had a blood clot are advised not to use Lysteda.

Furthermore, patients who experience any changes in their eyes are urged to report to their healthcare provider. This is because Lysteda has been linked to an increased risk of retinal vein and retinal artery occlusion, which can cause loss of vision.

Lysteda Information

Other side effects associated with Lysteda include back pain, abdominal pain, headache, sinus problems, muscle cramps, fatigue and anemia.

Lysteda has not been studied in patients younger than 18 years old.

January 27, 2012
Heavy menstrual bleeding is a sufficient-enough issue for some women to consider surgery, such as a hysterectomy, to stem the flow and related health issues once and for all.
