LYMErix Severe Side Effects Reported

FDA Investigates LYMErix

LYMErix is a vaccine intended to protect against Lyme Disease. The FDA has received reports of severe reactions from a number of people who have received the vaccine. Some of the reported side effects were: arthralgia, myalgia, pain, asthenia, headache, fever, flu syndrome and rashes. Many of the reports list symptoms of severe arthritis and even of Lyme Disease.

The vaccine was made by SmithKline Beecham Biologicals, a subsidiary of SmithKline Beecham, a giant British pharmaceutical firm. The company voluntarily discontinued distribution of the vaccine in 2001 due to safety concerns.

Over 400,000 Americans have received the LYMErix vaccine since it's introduction in 1998.
