Listeria Outbreak at Maple Leaf Meats Leaves One Dead, 16 Ill


Maple Leaf Recalls Packaged Meats

The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed that one person is dead from listeria monocytogenes contamination found in Maple Leaf packaged meats. A further 16 people are ill from consuming contaminated meats, and Maple Leaf has temporarily closed their plant in Toronto, Canada.

Twenty three products are believed to be affected including variety of turkey, smoked meat and roast beef products. The have all been recalled, as have the brand names Schneiders, Sure Slice, Deli Gourmet and Burns Bites.

So far, people in four provinces have been affected - 13 cases in Ontario, two in British Columbia, one in Saskatchewan, and one in Quebec.

McDonald's Canada has temporarily removed its turkey BLT sandwich from its menu as a precautionary measure.
