Immunological Drugs: May Cause More Than TB

A survey conducted by the Emerging Infections Network of the Infectious Diseases Society of America has determined immunity suppressants may be linked to several health problems. Tuberculosis has been known to be a risk of these patients, but several others can be added to the list including Staphylococcus aureus, histoplasmosis, and nontuberculosis mycobacterial infections. The study included 426 network members from throughout North America who reported on the various infections that they had seen in the patients taking these types of drugs like rituximab over the previous six months. As many as 50 million Americans may suffer from immunological disorders that are treated with drugs that suppress immunity.
