Gulf War Syndrome is Real, Panel Confirms
Neurotoxic Insecticides and Pyridostigmine Bromide Pills Identified as CausesA report just released by a Veterans' Affair advisory panel has stated that scientific evidence leaves no question that Gulf War Illness is real. Furthermore, it has identifiable causes, and carries serious consequences for affected veterans.
Exposure to neurotoxic compounds, specifically insecticides, are considered to be the most likely cause of the illness. The report also states that carbamate pyridostigmine bromide pillls taken by up to 250,000 troops sent to the region, is another cause. The pills were used as possible protection against nerve agents.
Additionally, the report states that Gulf War illness is linked to diverse biological alterations that affect the brain and nervous system; that Gulf War veterans have a significantly higher rate of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis compared with other veterans; and the death rate from brain cancer is higher in this population.
