Flushing Bus Accident Causes Death and Injuries

Flushing, NY: A bus accident involving a charter bus driven by a man who was fired by the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) two years ago, has killed three people, including the driver, and injured at least 16.

The city bus, a Q20, and the charter bus, which is run by Dahlia Travel and Tours, crashed around 6:15 a.m. at Main Street and Northern Boulevard, in Flushing, Queens, the NY Times reported.

Henry Wdowiak, a 68 year old pedestrian at the scene, was killed onsite, after being pinned underneath one of the buses. A passenger on the city bus, 55-year old Gregory Liljefors, died in hospital from his injuries and the charter bus driver, Raymond D. Mong, 49 also died in hospital, according to the New York City Police Department. Liljefors and Mong had been taken to different hospitals.

Mong had been fired by the MTA in 2015 after he drove his sedan into two cars on Interstate 95, then fled the scene, the NY Times reported. He had worked as a bus operator for the MTA. Mong was found to be driving under the influence and received a suspended jail sentence. He was placed on probation for 18 months after being convicted of driving under the influence and evading arrest.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the charter bus driven by Mong was one of a fleet of five operated by Flushing-based Dahlia Group. The company had received enough citations previously, for serious violations that it ranks in the bottom 20 percent of its counterparts for unsafe driving. Dahlia buses have received speeding tickets four times in the past two years alone, including two instances when one of its buses was exceeding the speed limit by at least 15 miles per hour, the NY Times reported.

The city bus driver reportedly suffered a fractured collarbone. The police said there were no passengers on the charter bus. However, the charter bus, in addition to killing and injuring passengers on the city bus, also slammed into a Kennedy Fried Chicken restaurant, igniting a small fire that was quickly puy out by firefighters a the scene.
