FDA Failure to Act on Painkiller Darvon Prompts Lawsuit

Pain Drug too Risky to Remain on the Market

The consumer advocacy group Public Citizen has launched a lawsuit against the FDA for the agency's failure to act to protect the public regarding the painkiller Darvon, also marketed as Darvocet.

Two years ago the watchdog group petitioned the FDA to ban the drug, citing more than 2,000 accidental deaths associated with the pain medication since 1981. The chemical name for the drug is propoxyphene. And it is addictive, and is associated with serious cardiac effects, even when used as indicated.
