Facebook Games Can Lead to Identity Theft

Facebook Investigating Reports

People who are downloading games on Facebook, at the invitation of their Facebook friends, may be at risk for identity theft. Potential scams include completing loan applications for extra game points, or a free iPod. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to this, and many have already been affected.

According to a report on ABC News, a representative from Facebook has said "the collection of personally-identifiable information from Facebook users is strictly controlled and limited by our developer terms of service. ... We are currently investigating particular reports of the incentivization of minor users to provide information in a context that may violate these policies."

Requests for birthdates and social security numbers are key pieces of personal information that can provide thieves with enough information to steel an identity. Other personal information that should be kept private includes telephone numbers and photographs.
