Curious George doll Lead Levels

The Center for Environmental Health has notified Marvel Enterprises Inc. that its Chinese-produced Curious George doll is alleged to contain 10 times the legal maximum of lead. The company has since stopped shipments of the toy.

Marvel claims it will issue a recall if testing reveals the allegation to be true. Testing is being done on a rush basis by an independent laboratory.

Michael Green, director of Environmental Health, says the goal of instigating a lawsuit is to get companies "to get the lead out of the product and have mandatory testing regimes to ensure the lead stays out of the products." Green is demanding aggressive testing "before the products get on shelves, instead of having endless recalls after they are in the hands of kids."

Curious George brings in revenue of about $6 million annually for the company.

Exposure to lead can result in serious health risks, including brain damage, cancer and neurological problems, to children who chew on lead-containing toys.
