Kirstie Alley Faces Consumer Fraud Lawsuit over Organic Liaison Weight-loss Supplements

- by

Los Angeles, CA: Kirstie Alley is facing a consumer fraud class action lawsuit filed by a woman who claims the Organic Liaison weight-loss supplements that Alley promotes are falsely advertised as being USDA approved, "when they are "neither certified as an effective weight-loss aid by the USDA nor anything more than standard dietary supplements incapable of causing weight loss."

The lawsuit, filed by Lead plaintiff Marina Abramyan, claims that Organic Liaison weight-loss supplements "are nothing more than run-of-the-mill fiber and calcium supplements." Abramyan also alleges that the USDA certified the product as organic only, and that the defendants cannot cite any evidence from scientifically sound clinical trials to support their claim that the product is "proven" to cause weight loss.

The consumer fraud lawsuit also alleges that the former Cheers star wrongly claims the diet supplements helped her lose 100 lbs. "Ms. Alley's weight loss is not due to the Organic Liaison Program, but rather, is the result of an above average exercise regimen and extremely low calorie diet, including her time on the television program 'Dancing with the Stars' ('DWTS'), where she spent five to seven hours a day exercising as part of the competition," the complaint states. Kirstie Alley is a board member and part owner in the company, as well as spokesperson for the products, the lawsuit contends.

Abramyan says she bought the products but "did not lose any weight or experience any of the advertised benefits of the program." She is seeking class certification and damages for false advertising on behalf of consumers who have bought into the program since July 2008. She is represented by Milstein Adelman of Santa Monica.
