Fracture Risk Doubles with Diabetes Drugs

Avandia, Actos Implicated

As if increased risk for cardiovascular events isn't enough of a problem, the class of medications known as thiazolidinediones- rosiglitazone and pioglitazone - Avandia and Actos - have now been shown to double the risk of fracture in women with type 2 diabetes. According to a study published in the Canadian Medical Journal this week, 1 in every 55 women in their mid 50s could experience 1 fracture on these drugs, which is double the normal risk for fracture in that age group.

The study, done by researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the University of East Anglia in the UK, also found that 1 in every 20 women in their 70s who took either drug for at least a year was at risk for fracture. No similar risk was seen for men in either age group.

The analyses involved 10 clinical trials that each ran for a year or more. The total patient population of all 10 trials was approximately 14,000.

Currently, in the US, about 18 million people have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, many of whom may be taking these drugs.
