Ammonia Leak at Millard Refrigerated Services
At least 118 people have been treated for illnesses related to leaked ammonia from Millard Refrigerated Services in Theodore, about ten miles southwest of Mobile, AL. Up to 300 gallons of the chemical were released into the air, possibly caused by an explosion at the plant, according to one eye witness.
Most of the people taken to the hospital reported dizziness and shortness of breath and people who live and work within a mile of the area have been told to stay inside.
Capt. Shaun Hicks, with the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, says that the leak has been stopped and that officials are monitoring the air near the plant on the Theodore Industrial Canal. The Millard plant freezes chicken parts.
