Possible New Side Effect With Gleevec

Case of Kidney Damage Reported

The cancer drug Gleevec, also known generically as imatinib, could adversely impact the kidneys.

A case of a 25-year old woman who developed severe rhabdomyolysis, while on the drug was reported in the June 19th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine by French doctors. Rhabdomyolysis can be harmful to the kidneys, possibly resulting in kidney damage.

This report follows on from an earlier but different case of Gleevec-induced side effects, this time by Greek doctors, who suggest that the anti-cancer drug may interfere with ovarian function and fertility.
