FDA Issues Nationwide Safety Alert for certain "Smoked Salmon, Skinless Sliced Sides" due to potential health risk.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated on July 20, 2005 that it had issued a press release in cooperation with the food processor/manufacturer Golden Eagle Smoked Foods Inc., of Hialeah, Florida announcing a nationwide safety alert for SMOKED SALMON, SKINLESS SLICED SIDES packaged in a variety of 2 lb. to 4 lb. configurations. The FDA alleges that the product may be contaminated with "Listeria monocytogenes."

The product is sold under a variety of brand names; "Imperial Salmon House," "Superior brand Norwegian Cure" and "Golden Eagle Smoked Salmon."

The FDA states that the alert extends to packages produced on June 13th, 2005 and that they have an approximate shelf life of 3 to 4 months if kept in an unopened, sealed and frozen state or up to four days if refrigerated. They are sold in individual 2 to 4 lb. packages labeled as: "Processed by Hickory House, Hialeah, FL 33016", "21555, Product of the USA", "keep frozen until ready to use." The product was sold in Florida, Georgia, New York and Virginia.

Listeria monocytogenes is a micro-organism which can sometimes cause fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems such as those with HIV, Lupus, or Epstein-Barr Syndrome. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term flu-like symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection has been shown to cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women and a probable factor in other conditions and disease processes.

The FDA warns that if you, the consumer, experience any of the symptoms noted above, that you should contact your medical provider as soon as possible.

The contamination was noted after routine testing on the part of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which revealed the presence of the Listeria monocytogenes pathogen. Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly urged to destroy them immediately.
