18 Hospitals in California Fined for Shoddy Care

Man Died from Improperly Placed Catheter

Investigations by the California Department of Public Health have resulted in fines for 18 hospitals in the state, for health code violations.

The violations included surgical tools left inside patients following operations, ventilators that were not turned on, and an improperly inserted catheter. One report states that a registered nurse improperly inserted a catheter into a patient's neck, resulting in his death. The nurse had not, it turned out, completed the hospital's training protocol nor a required anatomy class.

Each of the 18 hospitals was fined $25,000 per violation.
