Workers Denied Overtime Pay

. By
Athens, ALThe sad truth is that there are many hard workers out there whose employers are not properly giving them overtime pay. Some of these workers are putting in up to 70 hours a week without proper compensation for their hours worked, which is not only unfair--it is also illegal. More and more lawsuits are being filed to protect workers' rights and ensure that they are properly compensated for every hour worked.

Hairdresser OvertimeIn one such lawsuit, workers at Pilgrim's Pride, a chicken processing plant, have been informed of their right to join a lawsuit against the company. The suit alleges that Pilgrim's Pride has not properly compensated employees for overtime work, including time spent putting on and taking off safety gear. The suit could potentially affect 56,000 employees across the US.

A famous chain of beauty salons faces a class action lawsuit alleging that employees were not paid for overtime hours. Additionally, the lawsuit claims that employees were forced to work for less than minimum wage and were not given meal and rest breaks. According to the Los Angeles Times, the plaintiffs allege they made as little as $4 dollars an hour while working at the salon.

One former salon worker says she often worked nine-hour days but made between $40 and $80 a day. She also says she was required to provide free services at Hollywood parties. The plaintiff and her coworker say they did not complain about their treatment because of fear of retaliation.

In another lawsuit, a family of immigrants filed a lawsuit against the owners of a bakery shop, alleging they were not paid minimum wage or overtime and were threatened with deportation if they complained. Plaintiffs claim they worked up to 12 hours a day, six days a week. The suit, which seeks monetary damages of at least $38,000, also alleges that two children were forced to work at the bakery.

Four police officers are filing a lawsuit against their employer, alleging they were not properly paid for overtime. Three plaintiffs claim they responded to crimes while working off duty, while the fourth claims overtime for traveling to an out-of-state court appearance while not on duty. The officer's union alleges that, by denying the officers overtime pay, the city is not following the collective bargaining agreement.

A former trucker driver for Interstate Distributor Co. has filed a lawsuit against the Washington-based company, alleging failure to pay overtime wages. The suit, which seeks class action status, claims that the driver worked up to 70 hours a week but was not compensated for overtime hours. According to the lawsuit, Washington law requires that truck drivers be paid overtime wages when they work more than 40 hours in a week, regardless of whether that work is done out of state.

It is a violation of the law to not properly compensate employees for working overtime. If you have worked overtime hours but not received proper pay for those hours, contact a lawyer to discuss your legal options.
