Doctor files disability pay lawsuit against Unum insurance

. By
Jefferson County, TXA Texas doctor has filed a lawsuit against Unum Provident citing that he was denied disability insurance payments after he was unable to return to work.

James King claims he purchased a disability policy that would have allegedly allowed him to earn his income if he was ever disabled, Southeast Texas Record reports.

According to the lawsuit, the doctor suffered "debilitating injuries" in 2005, making him unable to practice medicine. King claims in the suit that because he was under the age of 65 at the time, his policy states he is entitled to disability benefits for "the remainder of his life."

However, King reportedly attempted to practice again, though at a lesser degree than before, according to the Record. At this time, Provident halted his disability payments. King claims the company was required to supply the monetary difference between his income and the payments he had received prior.

The doctor eventually quit again, saying his injury didn't allow him to maintain his work schedule, and now the company has reportedly refused to return King to his lifetime payment guarantee.

King alleges breach of contract, unfair settlement practices and breach of duty in good faith and fair dealing against Provident and Unum insurance.
