I had a Sheltie that looks just like Jack. He wouldn't hurt anyone. The only time he ever came close was when a child was hurting him. He lived to be a little over 14 years old. They are the best dogs in the world for children. I had 3 children, and 5 grandchildren around him.

When you have an animal you are responsible for the animal I do not feel any animal should lose its life because the owner. I believe that the dog should live and the owner fined. If you start fining the owners and stop killing the dogs and stop giving the owner the easy way out it would make people more responsible. This society has given people the easy way out far to long. Its time to make people more responsible

Sounds like a combo of dog owners who were too stupid to train their dogs…couple that with a foreseeable incident of a child bothering the dog…add in officious and arrogant bureaucrats…and greed ($40/day) to imprison a dog?…and here's what you have.

"If you threw most of the bureaucrats in the Potomac River, it would be the better for the nation and the worse for the fishes." — Benjamin Franklin

Even a trained dog will bite if it is being hurt. Since no one knows what lead to the incident but the little girl and the dog, you cannot assume that he wasn't trained. However, I do agree with not watching the child around the dog and the ridiculous daily fee. If the original owners have someone willing to take the dog and they know of the situation, then I believe the dog should be allowed to live with them.

The dog should not lose his life because of negligence on the part of the owner.

All dogs should be supervised around children. A lot of times children will tease or instigate a bite.

One good thing seems only pit bulls usually make a story like this. Pure sensationalism, as any breed of dog may bite for whatever the reason.

    Watch children around dogs always

There are to many times where a child has hurt a dog and the dog reacts. Should we put it dog. NO! The people should watch the child around the dog. If the dog has been in the family and never has hurt anyone then what happen during this time? That is the question. These dogs aren't known for biting just to bite. This is no reason to prison the dog and charge out of the butt cause of this. He should be able to go home and the child is the one that has to be taught not to do things around this dog.I have seen children pulling on a dogs hair and the parents not do anything about it. Think about it. How would you fill being tugged on.****There is NO reason under God's green earth why this dog should be put down, or in a cage. We as parents need to teach our children the rights and wrongs when it comes to any kind of a animal. Stupid parents not stupid dog!

I recommend the DEATH PENALTY for Judge James Van Slyke, obviously a moronic animal hater.

I do not live in your state, county or town but, I'm a resident of the human race and a humanitarian seeking justice for the Sheltie known as "JACK". Unfortunately, I have never met this beautiful animal or the Beratta family as I live in Ormond Beach, Florida… my heart goes out to them but I have to question such "SEVERE" punishment for such a minor offense? I surely agree that there are dogs who are dangerous and euthanasia may be the "ONLY ANSWER"….BUT..NOT THIS TIME ! We constantly hear our shelters begging for people to "adopt" an abused or homeless dog….. JACK has a wonderful family and home who have taken care of him and loved him since he was a pup…. The ENTIRE family realizes that the little girl (more than likely..fell on him , tripped over him or perhaps pulled his hair) who the heck REALLY knows…. the family understands it was NOT A VICIOUS ATTACK and they want him back. HOME…because HE is FAMILY. Every day we read and hear of mans inhumanity to man… TODAY ,Utica STAND TALL and let JACK's sentence be "FREEDOM"… HE DOESN'T DESERVE TO LOOSE HIS LIFE ! ~~~ THOUSANDS OF PATHETIC ANIMALS ARE DESTROYED EVERY DAY … SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY WERE BORN AND NOBODY CARED… NO SO FOR "JACK"…. EVERYBODY CARES ! ~~~ JUDITH HARRIS ________ ORMOND BEACH,FLORIDA

Since when are dogs more important than people?! I got mauled by a golden. Damn right that dog needed to be put down. I miscarried my baby because of the attack. And I'm a dog lover…I have two goldens of my own.
