After a sinus operation (Caldwell-Luc) in 1976, I was prescribed the anti-biotic Tetracycline to prevent infection during recovery. In those days, they didn’t have a warning label about avoiding the sun for 12 hours after taking it.
Not being warned of the danger, I went out sailing and came back “red as a beet” on my face arms and hands. Every 3 to 6 months for the past 35 years, I’ve been to the dermatologist for treatment. This includes Efudex, Aldara cream, burning with liquid nitrogen, Mohs surgical procedures and a number of skin grafts. While medical insurance and medicare cover most of the costs, it takes one hour to drive there and many scars still remain from the dozens of treatments.
Is there any responsibility for the manufacturer of Tetracycline to adequately warn patients of this risk?

    • teresa February 27, 2013 at 10:22 am

I too had tetracycline prescribed to me in 1976 for acne and I was not warned about the side effects from sun exposure. My side effects resulted with a bacterial infection and deep scarring on my face. I have suffered so much from this over the last 36 years.

Your story sounds similar to mine Teresa. Good luck and stay strong.

    • leslie May 13, 2013 at 5:52 pm

have you had any other heath problems i have the grey teeth and i could not have children i had to do infetility treatments just wonder if this is the reason the black teeth is bad also evey one thinks you did somthing like drugs i took it in 1973

      • JENNIFER ROGERS May 3, 2021 at 4:34 pm

My teeth are the same way. Do you know if there is any kind of lawsuit for this.

        • Karen OHara October 23, 2021 at 11:31 am

The shame, pain, and expense of damaged teeth does not seem to interest the lawyers. We were thrown to the wolves of the pharmaceutical company as baby lab rats and still suffer the consequences with hardly a concern to anyone – probably not enough money for the lawyers from which to profit and of course the drug company already made their money at our expense.

    • Amy November 20, 2018 at 9:02 pm

I also was sick with bronchitis when I was a child back in 1964 to 1966 or so. The tetracycline they gave me also stained my teeth. I’ve always hated my smile and was wondering if maybe it held me back from things I would done with my life if I had more confidence with my smile. If there’s a law suit about this, please let me know.

in in 1988 i had an ear infection and was given tetracycline for it i took them three times a day i only had taken them for two days and i started to have blured vision and bad headaces i call my doctor and was told to only take them once day. On the fouth day my head was hurting so bad i couldn't see nor could i stand any light . I went to the hospital an my blood presure was so high they thought i was go to have a stroke i was only twenty seven.after the mri and cat scan they still didn't no want it was. I was put in the hos[pital and the next day the doctor came and told me i had something pseudotumor cerebri. all because of tetracycline.my life has been ful of headaces and pain because of it.

    • Lisa November 24, 2012 at 12:42 am

I now have pseudotumor cerebri, from taking tetracycline for 2 weeks at a high dosages, I really would like to sue, the drug company, I have had to go through so much.

      • Christine February 9, 2014 at 5:55 pm

        Lisa,

Can you email me? I'm trying to put together a group, especially for those that developed pseudotumor cerebri (or Intracranial Hypertension) from taking this drug to find out what we can do legally. I too only took it for 2 weeks and started experiencing vision loss, stiff neck, etc. I'm still on medication daily to control it.

This side effect was not listed on the pamphlet from the pharmacy or given to me as a warning from my Dr.

        • diane March 10, 2014 at 4:10 am

Oh I am so happy to find others who are battling this thanks to taking a antibonic I wasnt allergic to. Well until this past summer when I was given it to treat a so called sin. infection. First time I had ever experienced blisters on my toes, painful. My doctor thought I was crazy until he saw these blisters. Gave me another drug but still a family waited till blisters went away and tried new script and again blisters and what I thought was a sin. infection. Major vison problems, stiff neck, headache that has had me thinking death would be so much better many times as a cry in pain. Unable to function normal and hating life, sent to three specialists to find out IIH/p.tumor. I weight currently 93 lbs during the time this summer when I complianed to dr about these problems I weighed no more than 110. Spinal Tap….NIGHTMARE with a leak that made things worst resulted in a rush four days later for a blood patch. Now I am right back to having that dam headache, neck to point I cant move it, throwing up from vison problems and feeling worthless as a new divorced single mom to teenagers that I am fighting everyday with myself to just keep going for them. They willnt give me anything of the pain saying I have so many drug allergies as it is. Really?? the pain is making me lose my mind, my grip and control on life! Makes a person very bitchy being in constant pain. So what can one do? Experiencing this I can honestly say I know why some people find their meds on the street. If dr doesnt start finding a way to help me manage this so i can be super mom and actually work a full week I see myself NOT having a choice but to seek assistance from our local streets. Risk of losing our house and everything over this condition that I NEVER asked for or was WARNED about.

I took tetracycline in the 70s to help clear up my face. I don’t remember when my teeth turns yellow.

My daughter has been dealing with Pseudotumor Cerebri for over a year, She has been thru 3 surgeries, has had a VP shunt placed in front of head to help with fluid build up, yet still having same problems.

        • Mikey August 22, 2019 at 9:02 pm

I have also took tetracycline back in 86 for my acne. I had problems in the sun, stomach problems and head aches. Now that I’m older after reading other reports on this medication, lm starting to think if I still have side effects today. I will keep in touch.

  • Cina March 18, 2012 at 12:40 pm

I was on tetracycline for rosacea for 14 years and never had site affect for this medicine. Now I can't by tetracycline because some manufacture problem and doctor gave me doxycycline.I think this same.

  • Karen July 24, 2013 at 8:24 am

I was prescribed Tetracycline for ear infections in the 1960's. All I wanted for my High School Graduation was white teeth. My parents in 1977 took me to a local University Hospital to "bleach" my teeth. After several treatments using acid (removing my tooth enamel), determined that the staining was found to be completely through each tooth and there was nothing they could do. I refuse to have photo's taken and was teased all through my school years. I have never been able to afford caps, etc. I can't believe there has not been a successful lawsuit regarding this subject….

    • Ken Blevins February 22, 2019 at 12:29 pm

Exactly the same problem. I guess only expensive cosmetic dentistry will solve our problem. The is new enamel throughout for big money. There needs to be a class action suit against Pfizer and Bristol Myers to fix our teeth to enjoy at least the rest of our lives. I fully share your pain.

  • Hodgie October 18, 2013 at 11:19 am

I was prescribed Tetracycline in 1965, long before the FDA or Pfizer disclosed the adverse side affect of discoloration to permanent teeth forming in a child. I had a serious infection and was given Tetracycline while in the hospital. Due to this, when my second teeth came in they were brown, yellow , ridged, with less enamel than a normal healthy set of teeth.
I have suffered all my life without a smile! I could never understand why I, out of 8 children, was the only one with bad teeth. It wasn't until my 20's that my Mother gave me the truth. I have spent hours upon hours in dentist offices, either with cavities or having permanent teeth pulled because they could not be saved. Due to this fact, I have an honest fear of the dentist and have always been ashamed of my mouth, somehow, thinking I was responsible. I KNOW I am NOT!
How can a Pfizer and the FDA discard this! They had not disclosed the warning of discoloration until the early 70's. I was given this medication in 1965. Pathetic! Shame on them! I am tired of continuing to open my checkbook and pay thousands of dollars in an attempt to give myself a smile. Pfizer and the FDA are responsible! I am going to act on this! I would hope and pray that others, like me, don't give up.

  • Gudmundur November 26, 2013 at 5:00 pm

I seems that there is not an end to the problem of the tetracycline effects on more than just the teeth but I agree most with Karen by that I was teased because of my yellow teeth and no later in life I believe that many of the aches and pain from joint and neurological problems there must be more of us to come together and make it known as such that the drugs were still given even after the medical society was well aware of its ill effects> I am not sure of the records because both of my parents have died, father AML, mother RCC.I am sure they would have supported the idea of the class action. The doctors said I had rheumatic fever and I was put on tetracycline it seems nearly three years and stopped abruptly in light of my adult teeth coming in. Telling my mother that it was a mistake I did not ever have rheumatic fever

  • Margi February 24, 2014 at 1:13 am

I was born in 1961. I took tetracycline for chicken pox, when I was 4or 5 years old. A dentist prescribed tetracycline to me a few years Latef for an infection I i I had in my mouth. There were at least 3 other times I was prescribed tetracycline over a course of another 4 years. Well, my teeth are yellow; developed gingivitis, ans.have no lower back teeth and on my way losing more Matters wora, I have Constant earinfections which is attributed to the tetracycline later in life and that has something to do with. I have tried everything from the whitening srips lasr whitening. Pzier must be held accountable and must settle for the unfortunate people that need new White Teeth. And compensate those that have had health issues. Something has to be done now. It’s 5p years later and this has affected many people with yellow teeth and can’t smile with confidence along with low self esteem I can’t believe that This has gone on too long. Over 50 years later I an still suffering w4 bad ear infections and justabout losing the rest if my teeth. Anyone know the status on this lawsuit? And perhaps a dentist that would do pro Bono teeth for me? I’m took of my teeth; never neglected , and now I am almost with teeth and feel miserable especially with the cvertigo

When I was a child, I was given Tetracycline for an ear infection in the early 70's. My teeth are grey and yellow as a result. My self-image and self-esteem withered and died as a result. My life has been ruined by Tetracycline. I'm 43 now, single, no long-term relationships, no kids, no home of my own, no stable job, no hope for the future. Thanks Tetracycline! (I'm curious, did any of the makers or sellers of this detrimental drug gave it to their own children?)

  • Paul July 31, 2014 at 12:17 am

I took tetracycline for several years as a teenager from 77 to 80, I have yellowish teeth,I had digestion problems and surgery on a fissure in 86, ulcers and digestion problems continued for reasons unknown. in 91 a unexpected emergency room trip and a ICU week long stay complete with blood tranfusions and still no explanation. Then in 93 after several visits to the hospital a diagnoses of chrohns disease, and my health continues to be a daily struggle, there are no other members of my family with ulcers or chrohns,If any knows of any lawyers or lawfirms who specialize in tetracycline litigation, a quick email would be appreciated.

  • Johanna Clark May 3, 2016 at 11:29 am

I took minocycline for 2 weeks in 1990, I was 16 years old. I told the dermatologist I was having headaches he said they could not possibly be from the minocycline so he prescribed another 30 days.

I continued to have headaches and near the end of the 30 days, I woke up on a Sunday morning with double vision. I was so scared I did it to myself. My parents took me to the doctor and specialists and I was put in the hospital. I had a lumbar puncture and an MRI and was told I had pseudotumor cerebri and it was most likely cause by taking the minocycline.

I am now 42 years old. I have suffered with these headaches since I was 16. I have recently found out I have a Chiari Malformation and syringomyelia. Chiari is a herniation of the cerebellum into the spinal canal and syringomyelia is a cyst (syrinx) inside the spinal cord. My neurosurgeon is pretty sure my history of pseudotumor cerebri is the reason for the current neurological conditions I have.

I am so frustrated, mad, depressed, anxious etc. I am terrified about what my prognosis with these conditions and I have one dermatologist to thank for a lifetime of neurological problems.

If there are any class action lawsuits…please count me in!

Hi, I too had tetracycline when I was young. In the 60’s. I have almost all of my teeth, but can’t do anything about the gray tetracycline lines on my teeth. Hate to smile. Is there no way to get help for this? Every dentist I’ve seen says the same thing…”Did you have tetracycline when you were young?”. I cannot afford veneers. I would like to know if there is any way to get help? Thank you

  • Cathy Gilmore December 8, 2018 at 8:27 pm

My mother took tetracycline while pregnant for me on 1967. I am now 51, was teased terribly as a child and bullied also. I am seeking dental help with crowns. Insurance pays so little
    Can i get some help?

  • Julie J December 9, 2018 at 1:08 pm

I was given Tetracycline off and on from 1956 (birth year) until the age of 8 in 1964. My baby teeth and permanent teeth were damaged. Permanent teeth have always been curled (how on Earth does enamel curl?), gray with grooves etched into them with dark yellowish staining horizontally across top and bottom front teeth. I never smiled in school, was bullied about my teeth, told to brush my teeth, etc. People used to ask if I had worn braces. In my 30’s my teeth began breaking vertically and therefore were lost; I have only 1 molar remaining, 4 top teeth, and 9 teeth at the bottom front, also severely stained and etched.

Currently at the age of 62, I have pulled money out of my 401k so that I will be able to chew food for the rest of my life. Though I have not saved a lot of money for retirement, I realize I must eat and other than my disappearing teeth I am healthy. My dentist has told me that just to be able to eat with comfort this is going to cost at least $25,000. I am in the process of growing bone with bone grafts. My 4 remaining top teeth have been ground down to yellow nubs while me tissues are healing and the bone grafts are growing. I have a false veneer over the top 4 yellow nubs to protect them. I place soft food on my tongue and swallow to have nourishment, no chewing is possible. This will be my life for the next 4-6 months while my mouth heals enough for implants and crowns. I feel very fortunate to have a least some money available because I know that others do not have the means for this expensive process. I have spent money on crowns over the years when I could afford them but there have been times when that was not possible.

If there is a lawsuit for this, count me in. The makers AND distributors of these antibiotics should have already stepped up to compensate for this issue! A lawsuit means they will pay much more in legal fees and hopefully for pain and suffering as well! YOU CAN’T EAT MONEY.

  • Debra Markley May 5, 2019 at 11:27 am

During the 1960 and 1970’s we were given tetracycline for every sickness the doctor would give my mother packages of 100 at a time for the eight kids there was we have suffered from brown teeth that fall apart migraines bone and joint problems stomachs and bowel diseases to the point some have had operations heart problems that have had surgery bad eye sight chronic pain in joints hearing problems under developed bladders and much more I would like to know the truth about this drug the health problems are way beyond grey teeth with repeated use

  • Marissa Campos August 29, 2019 at 3:16 pm

I was given tetracycline in 1964 when I had measles as a child. I was 5 years old. I had perfect baby teeth. When my baby teeth fell out and new teeth came in the enamel were off my teeth. Mt parents took me to numerous dentists to try everything until I was 18 and could finally get capped teeth. I’ve had to get them replaced over the years and then get implants and suffer the big expenses. I now would like to get my bottom teeth done but again it’s going to be a big expense. Someone suggested to me that I should check into see if there was a class action lawsuit due to this medication.

  • Tami Church September 12, 2019 at 5:45 pm

I can’t even explain the mess that Tetraycine has affected my life. I almost died having kidney and bladder surgery. Almost the most well known Doctor in Houston did the first implanting my ureters to by bladder as did not grow with me as I was growing. I was born in 1965, and I had a tone of infections! My teeth were just coming in as I was eight (8) years old. They came in half way and didn’t come out for a YEAR! Then, when they did, they had a huge grove out of my teeth were it decayed as well as the discoloring. So, my teeth suck! They are brittle and break, and I have had numerous root canals! My parents have spent thousands of dollars on my teeth and its still going on as I had a dentist recently look at my teeth and say, “OMG this is some serious stuff”! Well, the money still keeps having to come and I’m out of options! I want all new implants or I’m getting them all removed and get dentures! That’s my last resort…….dentures at my age!!!!! Who would of thought………thanks to that POS drug company that rotted my teeth!

Call me anytime! I want implants!!!!! 832-564-6680

I was given tetracycline as a kid multiple times from 1965-1970. That medication destroyed my teeth and also gave me Crohns disease that ive battled my whole life. There is no way that company isnt liable for what its done to myself and many babyboomers.

  • Tina Noaks April 17, 2020 at 3:42 pm

I was given tetracycline when I was 2 years old due to a tumor in my throat. I have lived my whole life being called names and embarrassed about my teeth discoloration. People assume it’s due to poor hygiene. I hate my picture taken, I don’t smile and it has effected my self esteem. I am looking for a current class action suit that I may join or to talk to an attorney about options I may have of suing the makers of this drug. Living with this has been and continues to be hell.

  • Tracy Schultz September 29, 2020 at 5:46 pm

Multiple dentists have told me through the years my teeth are stained and Malformed from usage of tetracycline used for illness while a young boy in the late 60s early 70s. I have had extensive dental work done and will require much more as I age do to tetracycline effecting proper enamel formation of my teeth. I would greatly like to be part of any class action lawsuits found related to this lifelong shame of hideous teeth.

  • Carol Fisher November 20, 2020 at 3:20 pm

I’ve been suffering the after effects of tetracycline damage since 1969. No one has EVER been able to sue inventors of tetracycline, victims have never recovered anything from the damage this drug has caused. It’s a shame someone’s life can be ruined due to people we trust to make people well. The guinea pigs of any drug should be reimbursed for the damage any drug causes! No one should have the right to ruin someone’s life and not be held responsible. It should be against the law.
So how do they keep getting away with it?…

  • Laura McKown May 3, 2021 at 12:58 pm

I suspect not Laura McKown. I’m sorry for your experience. They got me too and my brother – the drug terrorist of children.

It took a long time for me to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. Here goes…
As a 4 month old infant in December, 1965 I was placed in the hospital because there was an issue with my inner left ear. I was a small child when I began to question why my teeth were all rotted stubs. I was told by my parents that anti-biotics were put into me during my hospital stay for my ear and that nothing could be done about it, that it was a normal reaction.
Then, as soon as I hit puberty, I broke out with cystic acne which lasted for about 15 yers before it finally settled a bit but to this day at age 56, I still get the odd bout of acne and it’s very fustrating to put up with.
In the early 90s’, I visited a new dentist and informed him of my childhood problems with my teeth. He immediately replied, ‘Oh that was tetracycline’. He knew right away from experience what the cause was. Finally, I knew which drug was the culprit but even up till now, I’ve believed there was nothing I could do about this. I’ve always felt I was robbed of a happy childhood. Depression has come and gone and come back again often throughout my life. I’ve suffered all my life because of tetracycline. Has there ever been any lawsuits regarding this awful drug? Is there help for me anywhere? I have a photo of when I was 9 years old that clearly shows how bad my teeth were. It really sucked. I would love to get some payback.
    Thank you.
