I have this prob right now. There is a small access panel on the underside of the column below the switch. Remove it, press in plunger (gotta fish around) and then turn the key. There is a broken part in the shifter

Yeah — we're having the same problem right now — it's a Sunday night with no mechanics around or anyone to help. This is ridiculous that they would design a car to have this type of problem and then leave consumers helpless as to what to do.
It seems to be just like everything else in people's minds– the almighty dollar over all.

My 2008 Impala has been having the key stuck issue. We think it is the same problem and the same fix will most likely work for us as for the HHR. Thank you and I will complain to the DOTSafety. We have been stranded twice because leaving the key in results in a dead battery…

I had this problem every now and then, but last week no matter what I tried the key would not come out. The battery was dead the next morning and I believe as a result of jumping the car there was an electrical problem that knocked out the power steering. The total bill was over 600! It was covered by the warranty, but if I didn't have one I would have been in trouble. GM should do a recall for this shift column problem, it's not fair for people to have to pay to fix this problem.

Just had this problem yesterday. Being that it was a Sunday, all the dealerships were closed and the mechanics that I did find told me to kill the engine and have it towed this morning. Not wanting to leave the car running for 24 hours and damaging something else, I took it to the dealership and they killed it there and placed me 1st in line for Monday morning. Got a call. Yes, it's the Ignition Key Cylinder. To fix it, yes, of course I'm out of warrany, is going to be $550. Funny that being able to turn your car off isn't a major concern of GM. I'm just hoping that a recall does happen so I can get reimbursed. And thanks Chevrolet for closing ALL of your service centers on Sunday!

My sister called me yesterday with the same problem (mind you she is a widow with 2 young girls). She drove straight to the dealer and they said looks like the ignition (around $350 to fix) but will have to do a diagnostic for $165. Why a diagnostic if this keeps happening to the HHR. Well she had to leave it of course with no option of taking it somewhere else. They called the next morning and said that it was the gear shift (well that is approx $725 to fix). Now after reading all of this why are some dealers fixing ignitions and some fixing gear shifts. Do they not know what the problem is. Well I told her about calling DOT and reporting it. If this happens again then I know it was not the gear shift which was the expensive one but the ignition. I hope something is done about this, she can't afford this on a fixed income.

My 2010 HHR has the key stuck in it as we speak AND the motor was still running. With my two small children with me I had to go to a relative who had to unhook the battery and unhook the fuel line to cut the car off!!! What really makes me mad is that there are complaints from years ago… What gives???? Why wasnt this problem addressed years ago???? A wrecker came and picked my HHR up this morning and I took pictures of my 9 year old twins waving goodbye because that car WILL NOT be in my driveway again!!! I do not trust it and I will be looking elesewhere for a new car!!!

Happened to us today in our 2009 HHR LT2 with 45K miles. Pulled into the supermarket parking lot, put shifter in park and could not get key to turn to off position to remove it. Tried putting in reverse and all other gears then back to Park to no avail. Tried going for a short drive to no avail. Then we drove straight to the Chevy dealer. They said there had been a problem with the ignitions and they may have to cut the key to remove it. They did replace the ignition and gave us new keys within an hour. Of course, we had just filled up the tank 🙂 and were thankful that we weren’t going anywhere urgent like to the doctor’s, school, job interview, etc 🙂 and that the dealership resolved the issue free of charge.

my sons hhr has a problem with the key not working unless you pull & beat on the steering wheel is there a recall on this ?

  • Val May 31, 2013 at 9:36 pm

Happening right now. Everything is closed and can't turn off the car. So mad right now. Warranty just ran out to. I swear there is some signal that goes off when your warranty runs out that makes things start braking. I have no idea what to do right now and calling everyone to come help but nothing's working. Good thing I just filled up the gas tank right ugh!

    Sunday Sept 8th 2013
Pulled the car out of the garage to wash it and the key would not come out of the ignition, couldn't believe it. Dealership closed of course so Triple A call out a lock smith to try and help me and 2 hours later he still can't get the car to stop running. He Pulled the cable to the battery and that didn't work, finally had to pull the fuse to the fuel tank. what a joke. Why isn't there a recall on this problem, GM should take responsible for making this part so cheaply.
Had a problem with the brakes as well on this vehicle !!! what a major fix that was.

Im going through this now. I am able
to remove my key but it won't turn off. I have to diconnect the battery to get it to shut off.

  • Art February 15, 2014 at 9:17 pm

We've had trouble getting the key to turn to the final off position in order to take out. This has been intermittent, but eventually had the ignition cylinder replaced. That solve the problem for a few months, but now we are told by two different independent mechanics that the shift lever need to be replaced. The problem apparently is a broken internal part that releases a button to effect the complete turnoff. The part can't be replaced; it requires a new shift lever, which is only sold at the dealer for mega bucks. Time to trade in this 2006 HHR and not buy another GM car.

Count me in. Only 42,000 miles on my 2008 Chevrolet Impala. We have an appointment at the dealership, and I'm taking copies of all this material with me. The technician on the phone told my husband that he wasn't tamiliar with the problem. I'm going to suggest he watch "garage guy's" ten-minute video on how to repair.

  • Kathy June 23, 2014 at 1:20 pm

My dealer said it would be months before my HHR would have parts to fix it. Key is still in the ignition and sitting on the lot of our dealer. 2009

  • Marcos October 23, 2014 at 11:27 am

  • EC@910 July 9, 2015 at 2:37 pm

OMG…this car will not start and the key is stuck in the ignition. I am so dissapointed to find out this is a common problem in all hhr made by Chevy…it seems that it was done on purpose. I am soooo dissapointed. I am waiting for a lock smith now..also my car will not start at all!
