Miami, FL: If you received an “owner notification letter” from your car dealership regarding a defective airbag and there was a problem getting a replacement inflator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says supply problems are over. But the Center for Auto Safety states that only a fraction of car owners have acted, with nearly 60 percent of inflators untouched. That statement, however, may not be completely accurate.

Santa Clara, CA: Takata Corporation has agreed to pay $1 billion to settle multi-district litigation alleging the airbag manufacturer was aware of the fatal defect with its airbags but sold them anyway. At least 11 deaths have been linked to the airbags, which can explode due to a design defect. According to the proposed settlement terms Takata will plead guilty to wire fraud. However, Plaintiffs have objected to the proposed deal on the grounds that it doesn’t address the culpability of TK Holdings Inc., Takata’s US, subsidiary, and that the Department of Justice had been misled in its investigation.

Washington, DC: Another 12 million cars with Takata airbags have been recalled due to problems with their passenger-side airbags. Prior to the most recent recall, around 24 million vehicles had been recalled to fix issues with 28.8 million airbags, including both driver-side and passenger-side airbags. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10 deaths and more than 100 injuries have been linked to faulty Takata airbag inflators.

Washington, DC: Federal regulators have announced that an additional 35 million Takata airbags will be recalled across the US, bringing the total recall up to 63 million, more than doubling the largest automotive recall in US history. Similarly, in Canada, several million vehicles will also be recalled.
