Takata Air Bag Recall Expands - 3.3M More Vehicles Affected

The Takata air bag recall expands to include models from 14 different automakers.

Washington, DCThis week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that defective Takata airbag recall has been expanded to include vehicles from 14 different automakers. According to ABCNews on Thursday night, the NHTSA posted documents to its website listing the latest affected vehicles. These include Ford, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Daimler Vans, Toyota, Tesla, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Mazda, Subaru, Jaguar-Land Rover, McLaren and Volkswagen. Last week, Toyota, Ford and Honda released some of their affected models.

Early in January, Takata issued recalls for an additional 3.3 million faulty air bag inflators. This is the largest automotive recall in US history. According to the NHSTA website’s dedicated section on the Takata air bag recalls, “approximately 34 million vehicles are currently under recall for approximately 46 million defective Takata air bags that can explode when the air bag deploys, causing serious injury or even death. Additional air bags are scheduled to be recalled by December 2019, bringing the total number of affected air bags to around 65-70 million.”

The NHTSA, the agency managing the recall, will phase affected vehicles over the next three years. Priority is being given to older models and those in states with high humidity and temperatures.

When we received our notice it became impossible to enjoy using the car. It is now February 2018 and we got our notice just after Christmas advising us that the repair part "May" be available at the end of September 2018.
I wrote a letter to Mercedes USA and got a call today from someone who identified himself as "Steven". He would not provider his last name but began to tell me that my letter had been received by their main office and that his job was to "assure" me that my car was same and to go ahead and enjoy it!
I tried to advise him that in fact we could no longer enjoy a car that as the result of some fault in it's construction one of us may die. Steven could not seem to process this concern and kept saying that there was on and that no incidents had been reported involving the car we owned - I asked was that in the entire world and he became a bit upset and said he was referring in the USA. I again asked were not the kind of car I own made in Germany and were not they sold over the entire world and would not it be important to know if the feared incident had taken place anywhere. Again he became less interested in my comments and concerns and again stated he would only speak for the USA. Is not there some financial responsibility to the company as far as potential dangers, the impact on the car users and false advertising of the product that exceed the "repair"?
