Uk Report Indicates High Failure Rate for Metal Hip Implants

. By
div itemprop="articleBody" class="article">New York, NYA report from the UK released this week indicates that "all-metal" hips implants are failing at an increased rate. The report generated from data in the National Joint Registry for England and Wales, found that the all-metal artificial hips called Articular Surface Replacement, or the A.S.R., that were made by DePuy Orthopedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, had failed in approximately one-third of patients who had been followed for the longest period. The J&J implant was recalled in 2010.

Specifically, the report found a 29 percent replacement rate among patients who had received the DePuy A.S.R,., implant only six years ago. Traditional hip implants are typically meant to last for about 15 years.

Data from the Registry also showed a high failure rate with "metal-on-metal" hip replacements that include metal ball and socket pieces. The failure rate for these orthopaedic implants was higher than for artificial hips that contain both metal and plastic.

About 90,000 A.S.R. implants were sold worldwide – with roughly 40,000 of those sold in the United States.
