Washington, DC Sometimes it's difficult to talk about the nether regions of the human body, but the fact remains that the public must be notified: a preparation used to cleanse the bowel prior to colonoscopy is suspected of having the potential to trigger such dire consequences as OSP kidney damage. OSP is shorthand for oral sodium phosphate. One product—Phospho-soda and manufactured by Fleet—has been flagged by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Bellevue, WA They are two things that many people might not think go together: the use of an oral sodium phosphate and an increased risk of kidney failure. However, according to warnings released by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the risk of OSP kidney damage is high enough that the products' uses have been revised. Unfortunately, there could be many people out there who suffered kidney damaged linked to the use of an oral sodium phosphate but did not realize it.

Ottawa, ON: Concerns over oral sodium phosphate (OSP) continue, with the latest salvo in the OSP debate coming from Health Canada. Earlier this month the Canadian health agency declared that oral phosphate soda is no longer indicated for purgative use (bowel cleansing) due to a risk for OSP kidney damage, while stressing oral sodium phosphate products in general remain safe for use as a laxative.

Tacoma, WA Patients who used an oral sodium phosphate (OSP) such as Visicol, OsmoPrep or Fleet Phospho-soda prior to a colonoscopy may be at an increased risk of kidney damage. A box warning from the FDA notes that when such products are used to prepare bowels for a colonoscopy patients face a risk of acute phosphate nephropathy. The same risk does not appear to apply when the OSPs are used as a laxative.

St. Louis, MO If you took an oral sodium phosphate (OSP) to clean your bowels prior to a colonoscopy and have developed kidney damage, there is a chance your health problems are linked to the use of the OSP. In 2008, certain oral sodium phosphates, including OsmoPrep and Visicol were given a black box warning, the highest warning required by the FDA, alerting patients to the risk of kidney damage.

Purgatives (also known as bowel cleansers) such as oral sodium phosphates, which were readily available over-the-counter until recently, are generally administered to clear out the bowels and patients would alter their diet for up to 3 days before the procedure.
