Massachusetts Doctor Found Guilty of Negligence in College Basketball Player's Death

. By
Boston, MAFive years after their son collapsed in a basketball game against Worcester State, the parents of late college basketball player Antwoine Key received roughly $1.6 million in a negligence lawsuit filed against a local doctor.

span itemprop="image" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject" style="display:block">Dr. Dornia Abdulah gave Key a physical examination before he left for college and allegedly discovered a heart murmur, but still cleared him to play basketball without a follow-up exam. An autopsy performed after Key's death revealed that he died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart defect known to cause sudden death in athletes.

Key was 22 years old when he passed away.

The victim's father, Tony Key, told New England Cable News that Dr. Abdulah's inaction resulted in his son's death. "You're either healthy or not, she could have put down 'with restrictions,' or upon his cardiovascular checkup, she could have done that and he would have still been alive today."

Though Dr. Abdulah declined to comment on the situation, her attorney claims that she had ordered an eckocardiogram to follow up on Key's condition, but that Key never showed up for his appointment.
