Hyundai Fuel Economy Lawsuit: Your Mileage May Vary

- by

Sacramento, CAThere is little doubt, in this age of diminishing resources, tight money and a still-anemic economy that fuel consumption is a major factor when Americans are on the hunt for their next vehicle. Knowing this, automakers fall all over themselves trumpeting their fuel consumption in a bid to convince you to buy their product over someone else's, and competition is fierce. Little wonder then that car buyers are incensed over news that Hyundai overstated the fuel economy in many of their vehicles.

KIA, too. In fact, KIA and Hyundai??"described by the Los Angeles Times (11/3/12) as 'corporate siblings'??"have found themselves devising a fuel rebate program that will continue for as long as the affected vehicle owner drives the car.

It is not known if the rebate program is transferrable to a subsequent owner, given that the primary owner was the one who made the purchase under allegedly false pretenses. What has been announced, is that any owner affected at one time by incorrect KIA EPA estimates but having since sold their vehicle, will be reimbursed based on the time they owned their vehicle, and driving it under false pretenses of better fuel economy than they were actually getting.

A Hyundai class action lawsuit has been filed in Sacramento Superior Court in California, and is currently seeking class action status. That lawsuit alleges false advertising and false claims made in promotion of Hyundai's Elantra compact sedan. The Elantra is only one of several models across both brands, impacted by the disclosure.

Hyundai fuel-economy estimates, and in fact estimates attached to other vehicle brands, are based on guidelines established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For its part, the EPA does double back and conduct random tests on various brands each year, representing about 15 percent of models annually. However, the tests are primarily self-regulated.

Jamie Court, president of Consumer Watchdog, which is a co-filer of the Hyundai class action lawsuit over Elantra advertising, said carmakers cannot be relied upon to conduct their own testing, "even with the strict procedures the EPA has in place," he said in comments published in the LA Times. "The automaker has a vested interest in reaching a certain number as part of a marketing strategy. One or two digits on a window sticker can make a big difference in sales."

The Hyundai class action lawsuit??"in fact, the entire issue over fuel economy ratings??"was triggered from consumer complaints over the Elantra sedan. The EPA, in response, tested the 2012 model and "observed discrepancies."

Together, it was reported, the two automakers overstated fuel economy ratings for approximately 900,000 vehicles. That represents about 35 percent of vehicles sold through the 2011 through 2013 model year.

Hyundai and KIA, both headquartered in Korea, blamed the gaffe on "procedural errors" at a test center located in South Korea jointly operated by the two brands. "Given the importance of fuel efficiency to all of us, we're extremely sorry about these errors," said John Krafcik, chief executive of Hyundai Motor Company of America, in a published statement. "We're going to make this right for everyone."

What they're doing is offering debit cards that can be recharged by the corporation on an ongoing basis, designed to make up the difference in dollars represented by the testing errors. Fuel economy ratings on the affected vehicles will also be adjusted to reflect actual fuel consumption, according to the EPA. Mileage ratings on the vehicle labels will be reduced by 1 to 2 miles per gallon (mpg) for most affected vehicles, with the largest adjustment of 6 mpg for the automatic KIA Soul, which was listed at 34 mpg highway but will now have a 28 mpg highway rating. Both automakers will place new labels reflecting the corrected mileage estimates on cars currently at dealers.

Hyundai is also intent on asking that the proposed class action lawsuit be dismissed. A hearing is scheduled for December 10. For his part, Court told the LA Times the corporation's admission of error is a vindication for consumers wronged by the error, regardless of whether it is found to be intentional or not. "We are going to get to the bottom of whether the company rigged these tests, and if so, it owes people a lot of money," Court said.

In commenting on the issue to the LA Times, Elantra owner Howard George, a retiree from Huntington Beach, said he otherwise loves his 2012 Elantra. However…

"My mileage ... is not even close to what they claimed," George said of the Hyundai fuel economy estimates. "The debit card would be bupkis??"practically nothing."

The affected models are as follows…

Hyundai: Accent 2012-13, Azera 2012-13, Elantra 2011-13, Genesis 2012-13, Santa Fe Sport 2013, Sonata Hybrid 2011-12, Tucson 2012-13, Veloster 2012-13, Veloster Turbo

KIA: Optima Hybrid 2011-12, Rio 2012-13, Sorento 2012-13, Soul 2012-13, Sportage 2012-13

It's across the board with the Elantra and all other Hyundai/Kia models that share the same engines, The Sonata, Tiberon, Spectra, Rios etc ... I have a 2006 Elantra GT and the MPG has gotten progressively worse over the years. At this time I get about 12 - 13 mpg with 50/50% highway/local driving. It's because the retarded engineers that designed the engine decided to put the fuel filter inside the gas tank. The only fix is a new gas tank and it'll run you about $1700.00 so try to do it while the car is still under warranty. Most drivers will lose that much yearly in over consumption of fuel.

Bought a new Elantra in May 2015. 18 months later I have to drive very conservatively to even achieve 19 mpg in the city. I average 35 mpg at 60 mph. Completely unacceptable. I bought this car in part to save on gas. No savings whatsoever. My first and last Hyundai.

I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid it says on line that it gets close to 40 city and 40 highway but it has been averaging 30 to 33 I bought the car thinking that I would be saving a lot on gas and that just is not the case.

I purchased my 2012 Hyundai Accent. Was searching for a fuel efficient car for communizing and was amazed at the fuel efficiency of this car per the dealer and sticker I was shown. Well I was told by the dealer about the mpg settlement never ever receive anything from Hyundai although my car is considered qualifying. Now given the information from the dealership to register and they said I do not qualify as I did not do this in time. What the hell. Why was I not advised in time. This is such a sham. Will never buy a Hyundai or recommend them to anyone horrible company.

I am leasing 2014 optima hybrid. My trip computer says i am doing 32-33 mpg avg in town, which should let me drive for over 500 miles, but I can actually do around 440 before filling up again, which equals about 27 mpg avg. The trip computer of the vehicle is lying about it's stats. Unbelievable. I am not sure what I am supposed to do.

Purchased March 2015 for 2015 Sonata 2.4 sport.... Published - 26 m/gallon combine. However on my first few months... I'm only getting 19 mil/gal combine. Now November 2015 - I'm only getting 16-17 miles/gal combine. Trip from Office to Work. Who can help us on this issue?

We were very excited that our 2011 Elantra would get 40 mpg on the highway. In fact, shortly after buying the car new in April of 2011 I did a highway only trip of 230 miles to the Bay Area and my onboard computer said that I got 44 mpg. We typically got about 32 mpg driving to and from work. Then the word got out about Hyundai miscalculating the mpg and we were given the reimbursement card to make up for the lost mpg cost. I have gotten a card about four times (once per year). WHAT IF FIND INTERESTING IS THAT MY ONBOARD COMPUTER NOW TELLS ME THAT I AM GETTING 27-34 MPG --NEVER UP TO THE 40 MPG MARK. IF I WAS ABLE TO GET CLOSE TO 40 MPG BEFORE (ACCORDING TO THE CAR ONBOARD COMPUTER) IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MAYBE THERE IS MORE TO THIS MISTAKE THAN MEETS THE EYE. Was the computer giving me fake numbers and the service techs have changed something in the computer? Just wondering>

I owned a 2007 Hyundai Elantra, which I bought new after stupidly selling a 2004 VW Jetta diesel. I kept the car 4 months before unloading it. The primary reason, crappy MPG, well under what the sticker said. The sticker said 36 MPG (highway) 31 was my top MPG on the highway. And this, after getting 50 in my Jetta. You can imagine my disappointment and terrible driving range, given the small tank.

So, that being the case, it seems this deceptive fuel economy business goes back a lot earlier.

Never again Korean cars, Never.

Wow! It seems to me in my opinion from reading many of these comments. The lawsuit didn't seem to teach the company much because I recenty boughta 2015 Kia soul and it gets worse gas mileage than my 2006 mini van.Gee! You have to wonder what would persuade one to replace a giant gas guzzler with small gas guzzler. Could it be liars at the dealerships for this company or their very misleading mpg on the stickers?? Do they just say something about how everyones driving is different so there might be a 10 or so mile difference.Seriously lets sue them again and at least get them a little closer to the estimate . You should never in my opinion be able to sale anything off blatant lies.

I purchased a 2016 Hyundai Elantra in July 2015. The advertised mileage is 28 city/32combined/38 highway. I have 3,000 miles on the car and the mileage to date is 22/27/35.
I'm going to trade in for a Toyota and never, ever buy a Huyndai again. Talk about false advertisement! Get a Honda or Toyota hybrid, their mileage is true.

I purchased a Sonata Hybrid 2013 2 years ago. It was averaging between 575 ~ 585 miles per tank. In the past 3 months, it is only giving me 511 miles per tank. I tried everything from keeping tires properly inflated, to fill out in the evening to avoid gases taking space in the tank, changed air filter, nothing, nada. Everytime it is giving me less and less mileage per tank. My first Sonata Hybrid 2011 transmission broke and they didn't know how to repair. I should have known and not upgraded to the 2013. Very disappointed.

I purchased a new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. The first 2 years I was getting over 330- 400 miles when filling up my car. Now I'm only getting 288 miles in gas. I pressured into buying the fuel system service for $150 and the service guy promised me it would improve my gas mileage 100%.... Lies... Lies...Lies. Anyone else with this problem. I purchased this service at Hyundai city in Burlington NJ

I purchased the Elantra GT on July 4th, 2013 and noticed the gas mileage was off almost immediately. I took it back to the dealership (Hardin Hyundai) for the first oil change and complained about the mileage then. They acted as if I was stupid; they told me I just need to rest set my mileage after I fill up. I told the lady I do and I have done the calculations myself, which were also about one mile per gallon off of what the car reads. The lady just laughed at me and told me it must be my driving then.
I was told the car gets roughly 27 street and I get 21, 22 if I'm lucky. Very disappointed with the car, since the gas mileage is the only reason I picked it over an Kia Optima.

2013 Elantra GT; We get 20- 22 mph in the city on eco drive. Off eco its like 19. Hyundai and their dealers are a bunch of liars. I would love to also join a class action. It's unfortunate, I actually really like the car, but the gas mileage was a total bait and switch. Hyundai should be penalized for their blatant lying.

I just bought 2006 Hyundai Sonata. This is a 4 cyl. car and its giving me average of 19 miles/gallon. Just 260 miles in 3/4 of the gas tank.
My other car is 2002 Toyota Camry 4 cyl. and it gives me 30+ miles per gallon.
When I called the Hyundai dealer they are telling me to check and balance my tires.
Now I am reading all these complaints and now realize that there is nothing wrong with the car...its Hyundai problem.

What should I do about that? I am not getting what I expected and what was written on sticker when I was leasing that car.thank you.

My 2012 Hyundai Elantra recently went to MPH instead of MPG. How weird is that? I pushed the reset button, the numbers went to O, then as I continued to drive, the numbers gradually increased, however the MPH remained. My friends same year Elantra is stuck on MPG 24. We both need to take in for service.

I have a 2011 kia optima hybrid. The car now has 80 K miles. It has never achieved the 40 mpg hwy. Usually 34 mpg . City highway now average is 33 mpg. I to have had the car checked on the computer. Nothing has been found to be wrong. The reimbursement program hardly covers the actual cost of the difference in actual cost verses estimated adjustment.

I still don't understand why the Sonata is not included in this
mess. I have the 2013 Sonata Turbo and get 13-14 MPG with 99% city driving. However as I mentioned in my earlier post the "STATED" MPG for city was 24MPG...I at least expected 18-20. I've had the car for 18 months and it still bother me. Joined a class action (thru this site), however last correspondence was that a judge had not yet certified the claim. Not holding out much hope. I am going to try and find out why the Sonata is not included (except the hybrid), besides the fact it would cost them a lot more if they did include it. Maybe not enough Sonata complainers??

I bought my 2013 Elantra Limited Edition specifically because the fuel information stated between 28 City &38 HWY MPG. I've only had it a few months but am completely disappointed in the MPG. I am averaging 25MPG which is what I was getting in my Tucson AWD! I love the car bought would not have purchased it had I known what the actual MPG was going to be.
I had previously owned a Nissan Altima which said I would get between 24 City &30 Hwy MPG and I averaged 29.5 City and 33 Hwy! So disappointing. Can you say "False Advertising"?

I purchased a 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT and it was supposed to get 27 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. I barely get 25 mpg with the Eco boost on and total tank mileage at 280 miles. My 2004 Honda Civic got me at least 300 miles per tank and I fill the same amount with my Elantra Review sites report that I should at least get 340 miles per tank. It sucks because I enjoy everything else about this car, but the gas was a HUGE deciding factor and now I don't have that. It's false advertising any way you slice it.

I traded my 1998 Subaru Legacy GT AWD that we loved because of the AWD in the snow for a 2013 Elantra to save on gas over a year ago because of the 40mpg and I am lucky to get 29 on the highway driving normal. If we would have know the 40mpg was a lie we would have purchased another Legacy and have a car that dives safer in the snow getting the same MPG the Elantra gets. If I use cruise control and only press on the pedal when it is needed I can get about 32mpg. That is not even close to the 40mpg this car is supposed to get. City driving is a joke I am lucky if I get 17mpg. I signed up for the MPG REWARDS CARD as soon as I heard about it and that is a joke in itself as well. I have put 17,000 miles on the car so far and I have received only $78. The amount I spend on gas doesn’t even come close to what they are giving for the difference in the 40mpg that the car was supposed to get. I have tried to reach out to everyone for over a year to get on this class action lawsuit and I have had no luck at all. If anyone can lead us in the right direction to get the money back we deserve to get on this class action lawsuit list so we can buy a Subaru again it would mean a real lot to us.
Thank You

My 2012 Sonata Turbo gets 23 miles to the gallon - 1 more than the 2001 Subaru Forester SUV got under the same driving conditions (about 80% highway driving). And that's with it in ECO mode full time. I love the car other than getting scammed on the gas mileage. I've got a 26 mile commute and wouldn't have bought this car if I knew the mileage it really got.

My 2008 Sonata was returned to the dealership within the first year of purchase complaining about the 14 miles to the gallon I was getting. I kept accurate records for months, and the dealership gave me a loaner and supposedly drove it for a weekend finding out nothing was wrong with it. Here it is 5 years later and I'm still getting 14 miles to the gallon. Oh yea, in addition I just had to get all of the brakes, rotors, and a caliper replaced all on my dime this past week. The kicker is that this car only has 14,143 miles on it. It kills me that this reimbursement is not extended to those original owners of older models who were deceived too in this gas mileage scam.

I also did research on the Hyundai Sonata. Gas mileage expectations great. No way. I now have 3,000 miles on the car and average 19.2 mpg. Also the darn thing roars when
I accelerate or even when driving. I will be taking it in for the 3 month check-up and expect the dealership to do nothing.
Also the passenger seat is so low to the floor compared to the driver's side that I feel like the occupant is in a hole. It is not automatic and cannot be raised. Wish could join the
class action suit if there is one. Will never buy Hyundai again.

Bought the 2013 Sonata. BIG MISTAKE. I did all the research and did not read anything about the poor gas mileage. Unfortunately I traded in my 2004 Volvo XC90, which is heavier than the Sonata and got better mileage. I brought the car in to have it looked at. Everything turned out fine according to Hyundai techs. Spoke to Hyundai Corp. They sent out another tech, same findings. The 2nd time I waited for the report, which never came. So I had to call. Got a return call, that the car performed according to specs. And they won't send me the report.
I am trying to get them to turn my car into a 2yr lease so I can
get rid of this car. I will NEVER ever purchase anything from Hyundai. I will take this further.

after 2 months of research we decided to buy a 2013 Kia Rio last May 2012 and we are so dissapointed that our mileage was suppose to be 40MPG per gallon on highway( which is what we drive the most) we have driven the car over 18,000
miles and our best milage is 28 MPH which is way off of what we were told, we bought this cramped little car to save money on gas and as it turns out we arent getting much better milage than our SUV that we traded in for it, we wanted to trade it in but Kia wont give us what we owe on the car now so we are STUCK WITH IT!!!!!
NEVER BUY A KIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE ARE SO MAD I WISH WE COULD SUE THEM OURSELVES, AFTER DRIVNG 12,000 MILES WE GOT A DEBIT CARD FROM THEM THAT WAS ONLY 96.00 HOW DOES THAT EVEN MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE OF 40MPG!!!!!

I purchased a 2011 Genesis Sedan in February 2013 as a new car with 7000 plus miles, (this should have been a sign for me) but, as a Hyundai owner for the last 20 yeas I though what a great deal, I have own every car that hyundai make and this car has been my biggest nightmare/headache, the first three week of owning this car I've spent $300 in gas alone, I travel 60 miles roundtrip a day to work and have to fill up every two days at $55 to $60 a fill up. Ive taken the car back to the dealership three time and my concerns have not been addressed, I'm also having problem with the stero system that constanely short out, I recorded the radio so that the technician could hear what the car was doing, even after I arrived at the dealership the car stero was shorting out but the technician denied that he could hear the static, non of my concerns have been addressed by the dealership nor will they provide a service ticket to show that I brough the car in. at this point I pissed beyound words, Something has to be done.

I just had my 2013 Elantra tested for fuel consumption with the dealer. They calculated 23.7 combined mpgs, which they agreed was unacceptable. They followed up tonight to tell me that their regional manager said to wait and see because it is still in its break-in period. Car currently has over 5K miles.
I also have the overstated on board mpg display issue.
Wish I could return this car on false advertising altogether and get something else. It isn't even close to the new adjusted mileage, let alone the original.

Not only don'y i get anywhere near the advertised mpg, the odometer mpg per tankful is overstating by 3-5 mpg!! Check your mpg by dividing the actual miles you travel per tankful by the gallons it takes to fill the tank and you will see a big difference from what the onboard computer is reading. This is willful deceit. This is a built in scam to make you think that although you are not getting the EPA estimate, you are fetting at least what the onboard dash is reading, ehen in actuality you are getting considerably less than that. This is oitrageous and they should be sued.

I purchased a 2013 Elantra in May of 2012 only because of the promised 29city -40 hwy mpg. I got no deals from the dealership because of the 'high demand.' I only get about 20 mpg city and maybe 29 miles combined hwy/ city. I have yet to sign up for some rebate program because I think it is ridiculous. I will never buy another Hyundai ever again and will tell all about how I was lied to and mistreated by Hyundai. I wish I could sell it but its already losing a couple thousand dollars of value because its just not worth the mpg calculated and advertised! I bought a 2010 Accent in April of that year. The sticker mileage was 38 mpg. Since my old car had gotten 40 mpg, I quickly noticed the difference in gas mileage and started saving receipts and calculating. Average mileage was and still is about 26 or 27 mpg. For a car the size of the Accent, I thought this was unacceptable. I took the car in to the dealer and was told that nothing came up on the computer. They asked me to save three additional gas receipts and bring them in so that they could calculate the mileage. Being a woman, they seemed pretty sure that I did not know how to do this. I complied. They agreed. I was getting about 27 miles per gallon. But they told me that there was 'nothing they could fix, since nothing was coming up as wrong' on the computer. My daughter died in July and my granddaughter came to live with me which distracted me from the situation. By the time things settled down, I just accepted that I had been screwed. I don't even take the car to the dealer, even though I purchased the extended warranty because I don't trust them. I would definately NOT purchased this car if I had known what the actual mileage would be.

I have lost money I guess, but more so confidence in any car manufacturer or government claims. In July , at "lower -mid life) I bought my first new car - a 2013 Hyundai Accent after looking, test-driving, etc. competitors. Along through my credit union. Anyway, I was commuting about 50 miles on the freeway for the first six months i've owned it and I have approx 7,200 miles on it. I live in hilly San Francisco but take a bus more than my car. Now, my contract ended on 12/31 and I am only working a as a consultant. However, if any of the opportunities coming now are around the bay i will commute. So, except for a trip to Santa barbara a few months ago where we got about 41 MPG, my average (before 12/31) was from 24-27 Total, average, calculated with the computer and by hand. now, of course, I am finding it unbearable and will forgo the bull___ ATM cards and do what I can to make my purchase right. I am now averaging about 20 24.5 MPG which does include some 15 -30 mile freeway trips. Does anyone else agree with me that I should take this up with Hyundai and demand that i be compensated? I do. Maybe, like cell phones, some are good-some are crap. it's called Quality Assurance. All i know is something more than an ATM card better resolve this soon Hyundai! Social Media is on my side.

Hyundai Accent 2011 My Grandfather requested that I purchase the Hyundai ' I wanted a BMW-x3.

Our family ended up purchasing 2 Hyundai Accent 2011' vehicles based on the great gas mileage 35-40 mpg " initially there seemed to be an intermitten drag in transmission performance which I believed was due to a computer program controlling the intelligent shifting which I believed contributed to gas mileage differences " I took the vehicle to reset the alleged computer glitch 2 times, I even sent Hyundai an e-mail to address this issue.
overall I really like my accent but there are a few issues @ huge gas mpg for example I have looked at the digital mpg it states 21-23 thats a huge amount from 35-40 " I have taken picts to document in consideration of a lawsuit " Hyundai simply believes they will pay us some small amount which is relatively nothing compared to the lifetime of your expensive purchase yearly "Please advise options" San Diego Angel

Our Elantra has averaged 19mpg over the last two years. While some may claim that is due to bad driving habits, that's simply not the case. We have a Toyota Sienna that also averages 19mpg! We are outraged to have bought a car for it's "great mileage," only to have it get the same mileage as our minivan.

Please e-mail me if anyone knows how to get link online to sign up for the Hyundai mileage class action lawsuit...I have my 2011 Elantra exactly 2 years and are offered $85 by Hyundai...I am sadly disappointed with the gas mileage compared with what I received with my previous lease of a Honda Civic...and what they advertise

I stupidly bought a 2013 Accent. If I would have known this was the gas mileage I was going to get, I would be driving the SUV I really wanted.

I want to know what happens next? If the class action goes forward will we all have the chance to join or is there something I should be doing now? I want to buy a car that does what is promised!

My wife and I purchased a new (38 miles) 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid solely based on the MPG of the window sticker and price. We have always owned Toyota's and this is the first time to stray and the LAST. I am completely appalled at the MPG. I have never got more than 27 MPG. I put the highest octane fuel available which is usually 92. Not only am I paying for the most expensive gas, I'm getting TERRIBLE MPG. We have 3900 miles on it and it is showing 24.3 MPG. WTF. The dealership says it needs to break in and the weather is cold so that will also effect the MPG by 5-7 MPG. Really!!! I traded in my 2004 Prius with 115k miles on it and it never got below 45 MPG and I drove it like Mario Andretti. Hyundai has completely and deliberately mislead the public and they should be forced to buy back our cars. I filed for the rebate card and just got it...Hold on to your pants...$7.42 cents. ARE YOUR F%#$$NG kidding me!!. 35 - 28 = 7MPG delta. As I see it this car is performing at an average of 10 MPG LESS than it should and I feel completely betrayed by the false MPG ratings. With a tank size of 17.2 gallons that mean I am losing 172 miles per fill up. 172/ 28mpg = 6 gals x $3.85 = $23 more per fill up due to false MPG rating. So how does a $7.27 Gas Debit Card make this right?????

I have a 2013 Elantra and the mileage is lousy. I'm getting 26 to 27 mpg on mixed driving. I did get 32 on an 8 hour trip but that's the best. I had a 2008 Elantra that regularly got 30 mpg mixed and 34 on a trip so the claims of up to 40 were believeable (but false). The other car I considered when I bought this one was a Nissan Altima. Had I known 6 weeks ago what I know now, I'd be driving that Altima.

I think this lie is so egregious that Hyundai should be forced to buy these cars back and let us choose one that does what it says.

I have the Hyundai Accent. I too have done a lot of research before buying my very first brand new car, and am very upset that this is happening. With all the money they made off these cars I feel we deserve more than a gas card with 15% If I wanted to trade it in and buy a new car that has the right milage advertised I would be out new sales tax and insurance costs. Not to mention the time and effort and mental strain of shopping for one, time away from work, school, kids, etc to make it all happen again. I would be happy with a chunk of change in my pocket for not having to go threw all that again a-top of the gas card.

I want a differnet car! I would of never purchased the Elantra 2012. Keep their card. The best I've ever done was 33 MPG and I drive all highway. Never agian will I buy a Hyundia!

I factory ordered a 2012 Elantra in the fall of 2011 only because of the promised 29city -40 hwy mpg. This was my first car purchase in over 10 yrs. I got no deals from the dealer because it was a hot car. I only get about 20 mpg city and maybe 29 miles combined hwy/ city. Now I get to sign up for some rebate program and am calaculated $40.00 for over 10000 miles of chicago driving ($3-4 a gal for gas here)! I will never buy another Hyundai ever again and will tell all the story about my lovely new lie. I wish I could sell it but its already losing a couple thousand dollars of value because its just not worth the mpg calculated and advertised! And 40.00 is my yearly compenstion for a $20,000.00 purchase?? Really!!! If anyone knows how to join in the class action lawsuit please look me up. I would love to join in.

I decided to buy a 2013 Elantra GT on 7/24/12 after comparing it with two other vehicles. I bought the Hyundai because it had the best fuel mileage of all 3 and had some other options that I thought would be nice. I've had it 3 months, the car has 5300 miles on it, and my MPG average is about 31 (mostly highway driving for work)... lower than the 2006 Suzuki Forenza I sold to buy this one. Along with some other warranty issues right out of the box, this car has been a nightmare, consuming MANY hours of my valuable time that should be spent running my business. Nobody is compensating me for MY time lost, trying to figure out what's wrong with my car.

I've been at the dealership 9 times, have asked about the low mileage since I bought it, and get the runaround about "it takes 10,000 miles to break the engine in to get the best fuel mileage". Other dealers laugh when I tell them about the "break in period"... they say the MPG is what it is from the beginning or should at least be close. I agree that MPG will vary with driving conditions/habits - no argument. However, I bought the car with the belief that it had the ABILITY to reach 39 MPG, not 37 as is now advertised, and DEFINITELY NOT 31 as I'm averaging now. Why spend $25,000 (with taxes/fees) to get the same fuel mileage? My other car was alright, just getting high on the miles.

I saved and researched and thought I'd be buying a car to last for at least 5 years. The other two I looked at had 38 MPG as highs... would've bought either of those instead. Misleading customers to gain a sale is unethical any way you look at it. Now I'm expected to be happy about a $44.00 reimbursement check? For another 5 years, or however long I own my car? I'd rather have my Suzuki back and they can keep the Elantra.

I was very disappointed to learn that the new 2012 Hyundai Accent I purchased will not get the gas mileage I was told it would.

Buying a new car is not something I do very often, so I did a lot of shopping and comparing before making my decision, and gas mileage was second only to the price of the car in my final choice.

The sticker stated 30 city, 40 hwy and now they tell me its only 28 city and 37 hwy, I can say absolutely that I would NOT have chosen this car based on this new information.

Hyundai sent me the were sorry, but tough luck for you letter, and offers about $100 a year to make up the difference, but to me that's not all there is to it, the car clearly does not match what I was shopping for, and is of less value to me and to anyone I may sell it to in the future. They claim that it was a honest mistake that wasn't their fault, but it wasn't my fault either. I don't think I should have to live with a choice that was based on misinformation, and I feel the only fair thing to do would be for Hyundai to buy the car back, they can then sell it honestly based on the new mileage information, and I can get the car I really wanted based on real facts.

My wife purchased a 2012 Hyndai Elantra Limited in March 2012 and we have not gotten the advertised mileage during the most optimum time of the year for it. I keep a spreadsheet and record the results whever the car is refueled. She drives safely and moderately, using the eco setting all the time, and has averaged 31.3 mpg for all our driving for our first 8000 miles. This includes a daily commute of 32 hwy miles and 4 local miles. For comparison, the Hyndai replaced a 2001 Saturn SL2 manual with 136,000 miles on it that would average 34-35 mpg although it had a worse epa mpg rating (25/36) and a lot of wear on the engine. We recently put on new snow tires and the gasoline mixture is formulated for winter. It appears that we're getting 27-28 mpg. In our opinion, the advertised mileage rates are false advertising. If your decision is based on gas mileage, shop carefully and know that this brand won't deliver what they advertise.

I disagree i guess with everyone I guess.

The MPG from car manufacturers are estimates, real MPG varies based on a person's driving habits, this used to be posted on the stickers that gave a person the guesstimate.

I own a 2012 Veloster and yes I do get 41 - 42 MPG when I am driving approx. 55-60 MPH. But as I accelerate to 65-70 the MPG goes down to 37-38; again BASED ON YOUR DRIVING HABITS!

Also another factor is the quality of gas a person puts in the vehicle.
There are many variables that determine gas mileage.

The only people that really made or will make money off this suit is the lawyers!! As usual!!

I can't believe the Sonata GLS is not listed in this suit. I have a 2012 that we purchase in 2011 and only have 21,000 miles. I drive my car to and from work only. I'm not getting the mileage promised, so why the discrimination? Why is the Sonata the only vehicle not listed in the suit? We've owned 3 Sonata's and like the style of our 2012. When we first purchased our car it said 417 miles to empty, now it says 390 miles to empty. We keep our car in excellent condition changing the oil and filters when the manual states. I don't think we should have pay to find out the reason the mileage is not what it says it is. I think Hyundai needs to step up and offer the same deal as the other vehicles!!!!

I bought the 2012 Veloster not only because they said it got 37 mpg but because it is a sporty looking car. I have seen the car get 37 mpg twice but usually on trips from Va. to NC. it only gets about 31 mpg at the speed limit. I am also having a issue with at fill ups the gas says 418 or 423 miles till empty but only gets about 275 on a tank mixed city and highway. That is an extreme difference than what was advertized.

I have the 2012 Hyuandai Elantra , their claim was that I could get 40 mpg and am lucky if I get 34mpg and that is using the economy button as well. It was the selling point for me and I am pretty disgusted. I also have not been contacted by my dealership and found this all out from another Elantra owner.

I paid 30,000 cash for my 2012 sonata hybrid 9/11/2012 and the only reason I bought it was because of the 35-40 mpg. I feel so ripped off because I thought I was getting a car that would help the enviornment and my wallet since I do a lot of running around with helping out with grandkids. I was told it had 12 gallon tank and over 700 miles per tank and it is 14 gallon and rarely do I get 500 miles. I am really disappointed in Hyundai and my salesman because I searched for weeks and decided on this one because of mpg.

I purchased the 2012 elantra purely as a car to commute. At the time it was advertised as one of the best fuel economy cars on the market and that made my decision. I have put 45000km on it in 1 year and the mileage listed is no where close to the actual mileage. I do mostly HWY driving and I don't even get the city mileage they advertised. .3 doesn't even come close!

I would have never bought this car if the MPG was this low. My low is 23 mpg and the high was 34 on a 8 hour drive, not using A/C or the fan. I called the dealer shortly after buying it, they told me there was a break in period and just to wait. There must of been email damage control so everyone would lie to customers and say the same thing.

When I questioned the MPG when the Hyundai dealer called me a week ago to try to sell me a newer car, he said he wasn't aware of any law suit but questioned me if I liked my Elantra besides the fuel mileage. I said no, and he hung up the phone. Quality!! Anytime I call any Hyundai dealership to get a questioned answered, they say bring it in and then tell me it will cost $125 to look at my car or hook it up to the computer. My sister bought a overpriced Hyndai in 1980's and it was crap, I guess it's still in their culture 30 plus years later. I will never buy one again. I want them to buy my 2011 Elantra back plus 15%.

I purchased an ACCENT Sept., 2011. I kept receipts of fill-ups and calculated MPGs. Over 13 months it averaged 22 City, 34HWy and 26 "Mixed" This is well below the sticker estimate and their new estimate. I have not accepted any offer of reimbursement to date.

@ 5000 miles on my new elantra 2013, not even getting 260 miles. It says 377 miles during fill up, but never seen giving more than 260 miles so far. Its a marking trick to lure people to buy this car with falsified information. Im going to file a lawsuit on Hyundai and the dealer soon.

My wife and I bought a 2012 Hyundai Sonata GLS on May 25, 2012, the car is under my wife's name. When we bought the car it said on the window 25 city and 38 hwy miles per gallons and in the dashboard it said distance to empty 375 miles to empty and now when we fill up the tank it says 318 miles until empty and that's a big drop on the miles. I called Hyundai and they told me to do a diagnos on the car at the dealer, so I called and I have to pay $89 to get it diagnos to check what's wrong with it!!!!
Can anyone help me or if they have the same situation please comment, thanks!!!
