FDA Considering New Diet Drug that Contains Wellbutrin

. By
Washington, DCAn FDA advisory committee has voted 13-7 in favor of approving a new diet drug designed to aid weight loss.

Made by Orexigen, the drug, if approved on January 31, 2011, will be marketed under the name Contrave. The diet pill is a combination of two drugs which have been on the market for roughly 25 years – Bupropion – also known as Wellbutrin and Naltraexone. Wellbutrin is commonly prescribed for the treatment of depression and smoking cessation. Naltrexone is used to treat opioid and alcohol addictions.

As a result of recent controversies with weight loss drugs such as Meridia, which was recently pulled from the market because of its adverse event profile, any new weight loss drug will undergo close scrutiny. One of the potential issues with Contrave causing concern seen is an increase in blood pressure corresponding with increased weight loss.

"I am most distressed about this particular adverse effect," committee member Jules Hirsch, MD, of Rockefeller University in New York City told WebMD. "There needs to be very, very careful attention if this drug is approved." Committee members also expressed concern over the lack of long-term safety data on Contrave.

I will be tempted to try this new drug contrave. In the past I have taken wellbutrin to quit smoking and to loose weight. I did lose about 10 pounds on the wellbutrin however, I'm still battling with my nicotine addiction. The wellbutrin made my cigarettes taste like air and made me want to smoke more of them. In addition, I have used phentermine as a weight loss aid and let me tell ya, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS DRUG!! I lost about 40 pounds and was eating any and every thing I wanted. The difference was that I just couldn't eat alot. I did have long periods of time that I wouldn't eat because this drug completely supressed my appetite. My doctor will not prescribe drugs to me any longer as a weight loss eid because she said when I had the chance to lose the weight on the drugs, I did however, it was very short-lived. I eventually gained back all the weight and and extra 20. The drugs didn't teach me how I should eat to live nor was I inspired to work out, which is essential in maintaining a healthy weight for life. I am currently trying to lose weight and started a low-carb diet. I lost about 22 pounds in the first 6 weeks of doing it. I am at a standstill because of the holidays, I got thrown off track and now I crave carbs! I did gain back about 5 of those pounds and struggle everyday with making the right food choices. The only thing I have working in my favor is that I have been being active by walking and dancing to my favorite music at home. I am hopeing to pick back up a eating regime so I can go back to losing weight but the good thing is, I'm not gaining weight so far. This contrave makes me want to try it but I know my doctor will not go for it.

I lost two of my children in 2008 in a car accident. I went into a very deep depression. My Dr. put me on 350mg of wellbutrin a day from May 10 untill Dec. I have lost 65lbs. I am still having a lot of depress days but things are getting better.

Lorquess and Meridia were recently pulled for damaging health effects. Is it really worth the risk? There is an interesting article (at least I think it is as I wrote it ;-) at the Health Journal Club that makes the case that the healthiest thing to do is simply not eat anything that wasn't a food 100 years ago.
Certainly gets rid of the trans fats, artificial food colors, bleached flour, transgenic frankenfoods etc, likely would lead to healthy weight loss as well.
