Verizon Sued for Consumer Fraud

. By
Newark, NJA huge case of alleged consumer fraud against Verizon would leave the typical homeowner wishing to never open their door to a door-to-door canvasser again. In this latest alleged violation of the Consumer Fraud Act, Verizon has been called to the carpet by the office of the New Jersey Attorney General in an act of consumer protection.

Cell PhoneIt appears as if Verizon will do anything to sign you up. The Division of Consumer Affairs—an offshoot of the Attorney General's office in New Jersey—has in fact launched a lawsuit against Verizon New Jersey Inc. alleging deceptive and misleading practices in its marketing, telephone and Internet services.

The allegations represent quite the shopping list.

The company is alleged to have quoted one price for FiOS Service in door-to-door solicitations, direct mail advertising and otherwise, then billed consumers at a higher rate. Consumers were allegedly charged an activation fee after the salesperson in the door-to-door solicitation waived the fee. What's more, unwitting consumers found themselves charged for services, such as movie packages that were never ordered—together with a similar practice of representing that movie packages were free, then billing consumers for the services.

The advertising of a promotional gift is a time-honored way of getting attention and the proverbial foot in the door. But it is always assumed, in good faith by the consumer, that the free gift will be forthcoming. This appeared not to be the case with Verizon. Promotional gifts were advertised, but in many cases Verizon failed to provide consumers with the opportunity to contract for the types of FiOS service necessary to obtain the promotional gifts. To that end, Verizon stands accused of failing to provide consumers with the rewards letter or other instructions necessary to receive their promotional gifts. In some cases the promised freebies were secured only after significant delay, and only after repeated calls to Verizon.

There's more. Verizon has been cited by the New Jersey Attorney General for not providing customers with a written contract, and then billing customers at a price other that quoted. Some customers found that that billing amounts were different month to month even though the services did not change. Other consumers complain that requests to cancel the service were ignored.

"Verizon conducted a very aggressive marketing campaign to introduce its FiOS service, which included promotional gifts that were never to be provided," said David Szuchman, Consumer Affairs Director. "We will seek to ensure that Verizon complies with all relevant laws when advertising and selling services and products."

One of the promotional gifts allegedly advertised were flat-screen TVs. Many consumers jumped at the chance to acquire a flat screen TV and signed up for the service, only to be disappointed not only in the failure to obtain the promised gift, but also with a litany of other consumer fraud complaints as outlined above.

It has been reported that there have been 266 consumer complaints so far related to the marketing practices of Verizon.

"Deception and misrepresentations have no place in the marketplace," said Attorney General Anne Milgram, "and we will hold businesses accountable when they violate the public's trust." In its four-count complaint filed in State Superior Court in Essex County, the state alleges that Verizon violated the Consumer Fraud Act through unconscionable commercial practices, misrepresentations and knowing omissions of material facts, as well as the advertising regulations.

This alleged case of consumer fraud against Verizon could be costly for the company. In New Jersey each violation of the state's Consumer Fraud Act Carries a penalty of up to $10,000 and up to $20,000 for each subsequent violation.

However, beyond that is the breach of a consumer's trust—a consumer willing to spend hard-earned dollars in a time of economic instability. They say an elephant never forgets: well neither does the consumer who spends in the face of economic uncertainty, only to be burned by a vendor taking full advantage of a consumer's good intentions.

Consumer fraud is bad enough at any time, but worse in times of fiscal crisis. Sadly, tough economic times bring out the worst in people—and it seems, in companies too. Consumer protection is of keen interest for Attorneys General, and the Consumer Protection Act guarantees those rights and protections. However, it is unclear if the action by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General will result in fines for Verizon, or an attempt to compensate consumers. If the latter doesn't happen, it may be in the consumer's best interest to initiate a consumer fraud case with the help of a qualified attorney. After all, you're willing to spend your money at a time when many refuse to do so. The least a corporation can do after benefitting from your business, is to treat you fairly…

Before I go into detail - my initial question is:

Does it matter WHAT Verizon did or didn't (for) or to you -

- to develop the best approach or action and how do I go about it against Verizon wireless?

Verizon is not a business, people. It is a cult. Two or three years ago (maybe more) when verizon was fighting their union, the Bucks County Courrier had an article entitled Average Verizon employee makes $85,000/yr. The details were from Verizon management (it is believed) to get the public on their side to fight the union.
The employees therefore are reluctant to bite the hand that feeds them. There are very few who would blame the company for anything because the majority would come down upon them and where else could they get a job for upwards of $85,000 to answer telephones and drive around in new trucks? Sure - when the weather is bad you hear how they were out restoring service, but what about the other fifty weeks of an average year?
The government is afraid of them. Ask them for their list of contributions to various politicians or political theme backings. Oh, don't forget the read the "conditions worthy of note" from Zendesk the sponsor of this service. Who knows who's side they are on.

I owe almost 1400. to Verizon I never agreed to. Never owned a phone or used there service. The sales lady lied and couldn't accept no for an answer. No satisfaction from there customer service department. Talked to there legal department who tried to put words into my mouth. Now I'm going to the states attorney to file criminal charges against Verizon and there saleslady.

verizon and att&t have been rip offs for years, they obstruct you from getting any kind of help with their automated gibberish network and foreign support groups . Solution .....take them to small claims court or just don't use them.

Verizon really must love to be sued. They started ripping me off in 2004 and 2005. When I called to question why my bill went up and why were added charges on my bill, the person on the other end gave me a song and dance of a flimsy excuse~Verizon trains them well to deceive their customers. In 2009 or 2010 I received a letter indicating I was a victim of Verizon's fraud and scam tactics. I filled out the necessary forms and mailed them back to the attorney representing us. There was a class action lawsuit against Verizon.

Lo and behold, 18 months into my 2 year contract, they started ripping me off again. The first time the amount was $14.95 a month for four months~this time it was $25.00 a month for six months. I flat refused to pay them that extra money which totaled $150.00 in a six month time frame.

When my contract expired in February 2014, I closed out the account. They kept running my services until May. I called them every month to let them know I am no longer their customer. These vile thieves have reported me to all 3 credit bureaus for non-payment on my phone bill.

I wrote a letter to my Congressman regarding Verizon Fios. Verizon refuses to allow other providers in my area. It is our right to pick and choose whoever we want for our phone, internet and cable provider. Someone needs to close that company down for good.

I was added to my mothers account and told directly that the financial responsibility would be switched to her.
This is exactly as described on the Verizon web site if searching for "Adding or Removing someone from your account".
The description on the Verizon site, to this day, reads: " to change the person financially responsible for a particular account (for example, a new roommate). Verizon must talk with all involved parties, preferably at the same time. Verizon will discuss the transfer of services in detail with those customers." which is what I did with my mother.

I confirmed to Verizon that I gave up my financial responsibility. My mother confirmed to Verizon that she accepted my financial responsibility (so I could be transferred to her account)
After this was done, I later found out that Verizon reported me to the credit bureau as a credit risk. This was AFTER I had agreed to give up financial responsibility to the account and AFTER someone else (my mother in this case) agreed to absorb financial responsibility.

They failed to mention that I actually was financially responsible for my last billing cycle. In effect, Verizon should actually just have let me know that I am closing my account and I am financially responsible, which is in direct opposition to what they describe.

I had been a Verizon client for over 4 years, never missing one payment, during that time. After I confirmed I with Verizon that I was no longer financially responsible, I believed that that meant that. That is what Verizon told me.

Instead, Verizon reports me as bad credit, after the fact that they also told me I was no longer financially responsible!!! WTF!!!

Because of this, my credit score is not ideal. I am a first time home buyer.... or want to be. This has had a direct effect on my quality of life. Verizon is criminal!!!!

Verizon is run by crooks - my company received a collections bill from them stating the plumbing work we did on the street interrupted the service of someone that lived across and down the street from where we were working(It also happened over a month after we worked on the street). We had to investigate this and prove we didn't cause the problem and have since sent Verizon a bill for our time. Verizon has told us they have now dropped the claim against us because they investigated and found we didn't cause the problem or course this was after I sent them proof we couldn't possibly have cut a line underground from across the street one month after we worked on the street. The only way they could have our name is looking on line under permits pulled on that street and we were the last company to pull a permit so they decided to bill us. Verizon owes us money for sending out a truck to investigate and all of the office time dealing with their collection people by letter and phone. I think it's outright fraud they committed billing someone for something they couldn't possibly have done and expecting them to give that information to them multiple times.

my husband and I are now in the process of filing a consumer complaint in Nebraska against Z wireless...they outright have lied to us on cost and would not take their things back. Verizon won't do anything because they say they are not under their jurisdiction, they are a retail store.

I bought a prepaid card for $65 and a prepaid chip
For $13 dollars and the salesman Ken, took my cash and I called the office phone and it did rang but when I went home I tried calling my mom and the phone message was "you do not have enough money do you wish to reload" I eventually went with another provided that works for me.
However, on the following Monday l went back to the Z Wireless Verizon office, and I was told they do not refund any prepaid accounts, I told that will file a lawsuit and file a complaint with the State of Wisconsin Consumer protection and I was told "good luck with that, you will never win"
So now I did file a formal complain and will follow a legal small claims lawsuit. This company needs to be teach a lesson that consumers do have rights.

Well., Here I am again. Verizon got me again. It is better to have the Mafia after you for a late payment on a loan shark bill than to be in the hands of these Corporate Criminals. I believe that the repair people work in consort with the billing Dept. This can't be coincidence. First one of your services go out, be it internet, phone or TV. When you contact repair services they always turn you over to sales. Sales puts you through a horror story to get you to sign up for the more better service at a much better price. They keep you on the phone for hours by constantly turning you over to the higher up supervisor. This I believe, is to wear you out so as to knock you off guard. You generally wind up with a Worst plan for more money. If your contract is up with them they pound you to get a new contract. If you refuse, they continue with the service outages with no end in sight. They try to get you on tape to agree to a new contract. I told them that I will only sign a contract on paper, so that I can sit down, read it and see in print exactly what I am agreeing to. I was told that Verizon does not send paper contracts. I told the agent that I wouldn't buy a house, car, or anything else on a taped contract. Especially after I had been brow beaten for hours on end. I told the so called supervisor to email me all that this " contract " held so I could read it and if I agreed to the terms I would call them back. She sent me 2 emails that contained around 20 pages each of their rules. I received nothing that would show me what I was buying. They just pulled their knock out the service again last week on one of my TV's. The service rep. told me that the set top box was old and needed to be replaced with a new upgrade one. I smelled a rat right away because this criminal did not check the signal or the box. He told me he would switch me to someone else to order a new box. Well as you would have it he switched me over to the good old sales Dept. It immediately started with the brow beating sales pitch, and wouldn't let up regardless of what I had to say. I kept telling her I needed a new set top box. She kept avoiding my request and finally I told her I had to go and hung up on her. Well guess What.?? I received a new bill for a new contract that is about 40.00 dollars more than the existing one. This is on top of the last one that I didn't agree to. Now here the best. The next day the so called bad box kicked on and has been working just fine since then. Proof that there was nothing wrong with the box in the first place. These idiots made a big mistake. By the way, they did send a new box which is sitting on the floor. Electrical units like this do not suddenly repair themselves. Something burns out in them, and that's that. If this isn't proof of an ORGANIZED CRIME I don't know what it is. But if it walks like a Duck it's a Duck. These people belong in prison. I will file another complaint to the FCC, but I don't expect them to do anything about this, as all they do is notify Verizon that they have a complaint. I do this anyway so that there is an official complaint on file in the event they one day they get called to task because of their continuing ORGANIZED CRIMINAL Practices. I suggest that all of you file a complaint to the FCC. It is very easy to do on their web site. I also will file a complaint to the office of the attorney Generals office. Keep fighting and never stop. It's the only way we can stop these Crooks.

I paid Verizon Cell Phone service some $300 for a cell phone, barely got out the door of their office, and a friend made me take it back, saying I really didn't need that expensive of a phone service. I still had everything in the box it came in. The service manager was very nice and gave me a wonderful little flip phone for 99 cents. He then told me that I would have the $300 applied to my service so I would not owe any money for awhile. But I started getting billed every month and when i wrote to Verizon that I needed my $300 that I paid back, I got absolutely nothing. My bank can verify how much they took in payments for the absolutely worst service. I would have so much trouble getting good reception that I could only use the cell phone in one place in my house, and in one direction. They made all kinds of ridiculous excuses and never sent me back my money and they kept charging me more and more than I EVER agreed to. Then when I cancelled and prevented them from taking out more money from my account, they turned me into the credit bureau. My bank shows I paid about $600 in barely a year of service for using a 99 cent phone!!! And I am a low-income, disabled senior. Same thing happened with their Internet service too. Yes, all of these companies seem very irresponsible about their fees, very much creating fraud in my mind, and they are highly unethical. I don't think there is one good one.

Verizon conned me into a new contract for tv, internet and phone. They gave me a price 20.00 below what I had. I was told I could go back to my original service within 30 days if I didn't like the new plan. Every time I call them they keep switching me to a higher up " Supervisor " I have been on the phone for hours on end and still get no results. They keep sending me out of sight bills. they also tell me they will call me with another " Supervisor " but I never get the time planned calls. They lowered the price 20.00 but are trying to make me pay 33.00 each for all of my favorite channels that they knocked off. I need some serious help.

I live in Maple Shade NJ and I signed a 2 year contract with Verizon FIOS that included a $350.00 visa card and a free tablet. I received a voucher for a tablet that required me to purchase an additional 2 year contract for Verizon wireless. I contacted that salesman that solicited at my door and informed him that the contract clearly states "Free Tablet" and mentions nothing about addition costs or requiring additional services.

I have been in contact with this sales solicitor on a weekly basis and he continually tells me I will receive a tablet that does not require me to purchase anything or any contract. One week he even said he would deliver it personally. He never showed and the tablet or a voucher for a tablet never showed. I also never received the visa card. This has been going on since 7/25/2015.

In addition to the visa card and tablet, he also told me that Verizon remotes are are voice activated like Comcast and the boxes in the room are smaller that Comcast. Both of these statements were intentional lies to deceive me, the homeowner.

Next week I plan on going to the township of Maple Shade to be sure they know that Verizon is using deception and fraud to sell their services. I will also contact the Burlington County Prosecutor's office along with a nice letter the NJ Attorney General.

Happens once, shame on them - happens twice, shame on us.

We have been duped for the second time by Verizon & this time they will not do anything for us.

The $300 gift card is a scam. The person who set us up said the card would be there within two months. It never came and they gave us a BS story of how it is not noted in the setup notes...

Even though they send weekly offers for months in the mail for that $300 gift card if you switch, we did not switch until we got a personal letter.

Three months after a super pain in the butt two week ordeal to switch, we wonder where the card is. We call & after an hour on the phone, supervisor and all, they say we don't qualify because it wasn't written on a confirmation letter that they were supposed to send & the rep conveniently didn't note it on the sign up notes.

The supervisor, although pleasant, was schooled in the art avoidance of this issue. He was obviously taught on what to do when this issue came up. The amount of all the $300 gift cards is probably his bump in salary to field Verizon's scams.

We are at the point of cancelling, but are seeing how this plays with the Better Business Bureau.

I purchased and 4G device on line for $69.99 plus 12.99 for shipping, after chatting with online Verizon Wireless sales representative named Destiny Ann on 08/16/2012 (chat transcript is available). I wanted a prepaid plan, which was not available in store. The sale representative suggested me a plan which involves how to conver the current plan to a prepaid plan within 14 days or so. Within 14 days I contacted Verizon to change the plan to prepaid. That representative named Shaquilla Johnson admitted that I had been misled and informed me that there was no such plan. Since I have been cheated, I asked the representative to cancel the order immediately and I returned the device in August. Of course there was a 14-day free trial and I'm not supposed to be billed anything. Also, I was cheated by Verizon to make a sale.
Since then, I have been receiving numerous calls, emails, and letters from Verizon with various charges. It was over $200 and then reduced to -$24 and then raised back to $160. It was zeroed after I explain one representative and his supervisor in November. Again it has been up with $160.14. When I call verizon, they are aggressive and threatened me of reporting to credit bureaus. Ideally, they should pay me for cheating me and making me spending considerable time to deal with them with fruitlessly.

My story is a long one but im at the point where im going to take a legal approach. Sept 2012 me and my wife got two early upgrades on our phones through verizon but was only allowed over the phone and not throught a verizon store. My wife spent 3 hours on the phone with them that day which was way longer then any cell phone purchase should take over the phone since we are not setting anything up. Well 2 days later they call us and tell us that there was an problem on their end and they needed to re-do it. This took another 3 hours and they promised us everything was fixed and they would upgrade us to overnight shipping for free. Well 2 days pass and all we got were to cellphone cases for phones we didnt even order. We called as we were very upset over the poor customer service. They apologized and called a few stores so we could get the phone from them and the problem would be solved. We go to the store and we were there for 4 hours to be told that we cant get the phones because no matter what the manager of the store did with the help of a manager from the verizon center who sent us there. They told us there is a glitch on our account and they cant fix it and they dont know what to do to fix it. The next day my wife calls verizon once again very upset over this matter and they give us a resolve. They tell her to go to the store and set up 2 dummy lines and camcel them within 10 days. We do just that and this is where the real bullshit begins. They fry my wifes sim card canceling the one line and she spent 3 hours again on the phone with them and ended up going to the store to get a new sim card. Then we get our next bill and they charge us for 2 early cancelation fee's to hook up fee's and we were told that none of this would happen. We have spent over 30 hours calling and talking to at least 8 different people with verizon who all said that this would be fixed and it was not our fault. They ended up shutting off our phones for an overdue balance that is not our responsibility, they have thier billing department calling all rude and nasty. We are hard working and pay all our bills on time and verizon has frauded us out of time and money. This matter was supposed to be fixed time and time again and still it has not.

Seeking information from other Verizon customers who signed up with Verizon for internet service at an agreed upon price which was not supposed to change for the lifetime of the contract, and then suddenly had their monthly internet charges raised. Several years ago Verizon offered guaranteed unchangeable monthly rates first at $14.99 and then at $17.99 -- and then began demanding $19.99 for the same service. They then began threatening to cut off service if their fraudulent demands were not met. Also, to reduce monthly costs I recently tried to cut off Verizon's voice landline service to go to a "bare loop" internet service (internet but with no voice telephone service). However, Verizon failed to halt my voice service on the agreed upon cut-off date. Their agent then claimed I could not get bare loop sevice in my neighborhood, but she was lying. When I called back and spoke to two other agents (I told them I would soon be moving into the house next door to mine and would be setting up new internet service) they both confirmed that bare loop service was available on my street. Verison is, of course, still trying to bill me for the unwanted voice service. Verizon cheats relentlessly.

I hate verizon I had sprint for 20 years and suddenly my cell phone stopped working in my house? I went to radio shack and he told me sprint had discontinued the 900 mhz service and it was a verizon tower on the property behind mine that was causing the interference. I stopped at a dr cell phone booth in the mall on the way out of radio shack and asked them about trying a phone at my house overnight to see if it would work. He said if I returned it and cancelled the contract within 3 days there would be no charge. I asked to see the contract he said I had to pick a phone etc so he could put all the info into the computer to print up the contract that was the only way to see one. I paid him $50 for a cheap phone he entered the info and printed up the contract. It included an activation fee and a restocking fee so I said no thanks. He said I already switched your number to verizon! I said switch it back, he said you will lose your number, I told him I don't care give me my money back. He said I owed $85 for him activating the phone. I informed him I was calling the police. He then called his manager and his manager made really nice they wrote that the activation fee and restocking fee would be waived if I returned the phone and canceled within 3 days, he said try the phone if it does not work, no charge. I returned the phone the next day and he gave me my $50 back. I ported my phone number elsewhere. I received a bill for over $280. I called to explain the contract. The CRS said I would turn it over to collections and ruin my credit, I asked her name and employee number and she hung up on me. I then sent a letter to verizon with the copy of the contract showing no activation fee or restocking fee or early termination fee. They sent a response eliminating the ETF and saying they always charge a restocking and activation fee pay up. I sent another letter with the contract showing those were not to be charged, they responded that my contract was not with them it was with dr cell phone. I requested a copy of the contract they had with me. They sent it to collections and credit reporting agencies. Discover sent me notice they were reducing my credit line from $15,000 to $500 due to a collection on my record and my insurance non- renewed my commercial policy and my liability ins. I contacted transunion and found discover and my ins had looked at my credit. I have filed suit against verizon in small claims court and the hearing is set for monday 10/31/11. I have my contract and cell phone bill from the new place where I was connected two days later.
