Washington, DC In August, the online publication Slate (8/7/12), owned and controlled by the same organization that publishes The Washington Post, devoted some space to the ongoing debate over pregnancy and SSRI antidepressants, and the effect the latter could have on a fetus. Celexa, part of the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) class, has been cited for rare Celexa birth defects.

Seattle, WA Although one of the most reported and studied of the Celexa birth defects is likely persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), there are reportedly other Celexa side effects in infants that pregnant mothers could be rightly concerned about. In fact, studies suggest that Celexa is linked to birth defects other than PPHN.

Nashville, TN A study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology (5/2/12) suggests a link between use of antidepressants such as Celexa while pregnant and an increased risk of premature birth. Although the study does not examine the risk of Celexa birth defects or defects linked to other antidepressants, it does raise the issue of Celexa side effects in infants, and the effects of other antidepressants on newborns exposed to the drugs prior to birth.

Surrey, BC Given that Celexa is a member of the SSRI class of antidepressants (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), any concern with regard to Celexa birth defect is driven from the wider fear that SSRI drugs pose a risk to the developing fetus of a pregnant woman. Doctors argue the risk is small. Study results are varied. Still, when the respected British Medical Journal (BMJ) publishes a study, one can be assured that study has been well documented, properly vetted and peer reviewed.
