Commission Co-Chair Says Management at Fault in BP Oil Spill

. By
Washington, DCThe co-chairman of President Obama's commission investigating the BP oil spill says that management should be blamed for the blowout of the PLC's Macondo well that caused the worst offshore oil spill in US history, the Wall Street Journal reports.

span itemprop="image" itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/ImageObject" style="display:block">"The series of decisions that doomed Macondo evidenced a failure of management, and good management could have avoided a catastrophe," William Reilly, a co-chair of the panel, said recently at the beginning of a final round of the commission's public deliberations.

During a previous hearing, Fred Bartlit, the commission's chief counsel, said that there had been no evidence found that suggested workers on the rig specifically decided to cut costs while sacrificing some safety, according to the news source.

In addition, the panel revealed a list of accidents that have occurred around the world since 1977 that showed the BP oil spill "wasn't a fluke," according to staff member Nancy Kete.

According to scientists at the Flow Rate Technical Group, the explosion spilled 205.8 million gallons of oil into the Gulf.
